Got my 15 year old kitty when she was 8 weeks. The first 5 years, she would greet me at the door after work for her 5-minute holding session. then she did not want to be held.
fast forward to 5 years... kitty starts to act weird and becomes my shadow. follows me room to room and loves to be near me and takes naps with me.
in this last year or two, she is a snuggle bunny. getting older has made her extremely affectionate. she has gotten creative in her ability to get my attention. i am enjoying every moment with her.
yours may also grow into it later?

I love orange kitties, or as our British friends call them a "ginger cat". We have 1 snuggler in our bunch and that is our brown tabby male. Our other 3 current rescues are an orange tabby, a grey long hair, and a Manx, and none of them are snugglers.

We've had 5 cats so far, and our current two are both snugglers from the word go. The older of the two never used to "nuzzle" until a couple years ago; now he loves to head-butt and rub his chin & cheeks on us. (He's now 17.) He's always been a lap cat and loves to be picked up & held. We adopted him as a kitten.
The younger, our 4-year-old, we adopted as a 2-year-old. She loves to sit on our laps & cuddle, but she has to initiate the action. She will rub her head on us occasionally, but mostly doesn't; she does, however, lean her head on us & look up adoringly (how could one NOT like a cat who does that?! )
Our other 3 cats detested being held, and one out of the three didn't especially like sitting on our laps either (even of her own accord). She would, however, lie on top of me when I was in bed. I didn't really like that, as she weighed 14-18 lbs!
I think the answer is that each cat is an individual. They learn cat behaviors from their mothers, and from each other in a multi-cat household. Some will exhibit certain normal cat behaviors, others may be missing some from their repertoire, depending on what they have learned.

Christmas of 'o5 we adopted a nine yr old male cat, lots of trust issues and we could not get very close to him, it's been a lot of work and consistency to just be able to rub his head or scratch his chin, but he's made amazing progress, one thing he does lately that he never did before is butt my forehead, if I bend down to talk to him that's when he'll do it.
I never thought we'd get this close so more is possible.
Then we took in an abandoned starving kitten that just purrs and snuggles all the time, but he came here lookin for food, shelter, and security and he got all that and more and we got a kitten that shows us the love every day in every way.
No two are alike but sometimes it maks a difference when they're so young and needy.

Ours is not a "nuzzler" either UNLESS she smells and wants a piece of pork rind. She LOVES them for some reason. A few tiny bits and she is a happy kitty. But she will push her head against you hard while she begs for a morsel. She doesn't get table scraps but those rinds make her crazy. One would think they had catnip in them.

Wow the rescue shelters have the most beautiful furkids waiting for a good home. what a honey. I have a 12 yr old tortie, had her since she was 1 yr old. not a snuggler until the last year. when she comes and snuggles my hubby or me we wander if we are perhaps dying because it is so out of character. our ornage boy who died last Aug was not a snuggler and or beige boy who died in April was a head bunter and snuggled in bed under the blankets with his head on my pillow and my arm around him. Once he got sick though he stopped bunting and cuddling. They all are different and sometimes its a matter of adjusting to their new home and that can take awhile. None the less you are going to have many many happy loving moments with this beauty. Enjoy and thanks for taking her in.

I suspect there are more different personality types among cats than there are among dogs. They're all really unique. We've only had one really mushy cat but our others became more loving the older they got. The last year of our Siamese Sam's life, I couldn't eat a meal without him resting in my lap. That was fine, he was super independent when younger so it was a nice change. Our 12 yr old Edna (orange, marmalade tabby) loves to lay on her back and beckon with her "arms" for us to pick her up, like a toddler. She, too, was quite the independent young cat. She also likes to get behind me on the upper back of the sofa and weave my hair into dreadlocks.

thanks Starfire5 of posting picts with your question. It's so much fun to see the animal we are discussing!
and thanks all for the answers, many different ideas....
I have inherited my mom's cats, and the first few months I felt I was only a food distributor, but it has been 2 years now and they are slowly transforming into affectionate cats! The boy took 3 months before starting to purrrrr....
She will probably change as she gets older.
