Nikita showed on our welcome mat 11 years ago and she has never been affectionate. She likes to be in the same room or on the same couch, just not in the lap. Oz is a Humane Society adoption and it took 2 years for her to come out from under the bed!! Now she likes to give belly massages in return for chin scratches. Cleo, our latest rescue, allows us to pet her for a minute or two before she remembers she has an important date with the food dish. The only 'nuzzler' in the family is the dog! :-)

Cats are just the best! Love em! My first cat wanted to be in the room I was in, and would tolerate being picked up or loved on-but she really didn't like it. My tomcat does the head butt thing-I read somewhere that is a tomcat kiss-and he wants to lean against me, or sleep on me. He also does the lay on his back and gaze adoringly up and holds my chin! My little girl cat also tolerates me picking her up, but she is happiest to sit behind me on the back of the dinette. She puts me to bed at night, purring while laying next to me with one leg thrown over my arm. As soon as I fall asleep, she goes over to the tomcat and spoons with him. Seems to me that having more than one cat also causes their personalities to develop more..

I have managed to accumulate cats. I don't know how it happens but you just turn around and there's another cat. We tend to keep them 20+ years on average so it is no small committment. Currently we have five. One of them, Tuffy an orange Tabby, loves the RV. When I go outside he watches through the window and if I go inside the RV he goes crazy. So I have to bring him out--usually someone in the family brings him too me because they get tired of hearing him meow.
When he gets inside the RV he doesn't want to come out. We play with his favorite toy and feed him treats. It's his place. I keep his visits to a couple of hours since there is no litter box but so far no accidents. We have not brought him with us yet but he might just be the perfect RVing cat.

I had a cat once that growled instead of purred. She loved to be petted, but would growl and snarl the whole time. I had her from birth and she was the smallest of the litter. She appeared absolutely fierce when she came to be petted, but would arch her back into my hand. She never scratched or bit.
Eventually, she learned to purr at about 3 years old.

I think cats (and dogs for that matter) are enormously affected by their early experiences. The best cat I’ve ever owned in a lifetime of owning cats came to us from the local shelter at six months old and no one knew her history. She was smart as a whip, loving, fun and a tremendous mouser, to boot.
But, every time I picked up a shotgun (something that happens with frequency in my home as I am an upland bird hunter, bird hunting guide and competitive shooter) this cat would run to hide in utter terror. You wouldn’t see her again for hours. She lived to be 20 years old and still had that fear, even though I had never (and would never) scared her with a gun, she never saw or heard one fired, etc.
The only thing I can figure is that she had some terrible experience with a gun early in her life and that never left her.
I suspect behaviors such as the one being discussed here may have such origins. Also, some cats are very affectionate; others just seem totally aloof and could care less if you live or died; and everything in between.

We rescued a cat last year that we thought was about 19. Turns out she's 22. She's very affectionate, but not a nuzzler -- unless she sees WLToo open one eye early in the morning, and then she puts her nose on his. That's about the extent of nuzzling.
DOTL Spec. Alexander the Grrreat, on the other hand, is the head bumpingest cat I've ever had. See hooman, must bump heads.
We're taking care of a friend's 19-year-old Siamese right now. Pyewacket doesn't nuzzle; he drapes himself limply along my chest, while calling me every evil name in his vocabulary, with an occasional hiss for good measure. Tonight, after we gave him all his medications, then washed them down with a little water through a syringe, I'm fairly sure he quoted the Bhagavad-Gita: "Now I am become Shiva, the Shatterer of Worlds."
Once I put him down, he stalked away, and literally shrieked at us -- somthing along the lines of "From Hell's heart I stab at thee! For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee!"
If he were younger, he might actually have tried the "I can haz artery!" attack, but luckily, he's all talk and no action... Most definitely not a nuzzler.

I knew a kitten like that once-it was tough not to laugh at the little fellow. His people and I would humor him and act all scared, I swear he grinned at us! He believed his little potty mouth, but he was all talk too. Grew up to be quite the love bucket!
