An occasional event that goes awry is to be expected. I NEVER expect perfection, there's no such thing. The number of well-executed NASCAR events far outnumber the imperfect ones. For those of us who are not in a financial position to attend the races, the TV coverage of the NASCAR races and the drama is a much-appreciated gift. I choose to NOT live my life in a bad mood. But, if you want to focus on atrocities, there are several right here in the USA that I can recommend.
Willie..I couldn’t agree more. Nascar has done many things well. My only gripe on this whole incident is that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is being viewed with a jaundice eye because of other’s shortcomings at that just isn’t fair. The fans saw an absolutely horrible event and who paid good money are being told, Tough…deal with it, by Nascar/Goodyear who brought the whole thing on themselves.
I hate to throw in with conspiracy theorists, but I have to believe the bean counters were put on point when this event started going south even before it started and told management that we don’t want to have to give refunds for this multitude…make sure you run the event to completion no matter how painful…why else would they bring tires in for Pocono as an out for them to avoid the bad circumstances they saw coming.
In hindsight this whole thing could have been avoided with a little more tire testing. But Nascar just doesn’t seem to want to spend adequate money on it. This isn’t the first time they, Nascar/Goodyear has had problems with tires. The Atlanta event if memory serves me left a lot to be desired as well. Goodyear made a poor tire…but Nascar is ultimately responsible as they instruct which tire to bring for a given event.
Fair enough. But, keep in mind that we are talking about an entertainment venue. I mean, it's a far cry from discussing how in the heck are we going to come up with the money to feed the family.
Therefore, I just can't take it as seriously as others.
I've been a racing participant, and did it for more years than I care to admit. If left up to the participant, how many times will they choose the wrong tire compound? Even at events where you are allowed to "walk the track", and make a determination with regard to abrasion character, invariably you will choose a less-than-optimum tire compound. Of course, this means that the participant spent thousands and thousands of dollars in order to bring a giant tire assortment. Been there, done that. Consequently, "tire deals" evolved, between the racing associations and the tire manufacturers. This was a move to save money and to "level the playing field". Everyone on the same tire is not a bad development. The main thing that's bad about it is that "someone else" decides which is the best choice of tire. In this case, it's easy to see why Goodyear is chosen by NASCAR as the entity who is in the best position to be the decider. Over a period of 20 years, judgement errors will be made.
I know you know all of the above. So, what you are saying is that NASCAR should apologize, and that they should do it in a "money where your mouth is" fashion.
But, I know it doesn't work this way. I see it as a game of chance. You pays your money and you takes your chances.
The way I see it, based on history, if I spend the money to purchase tickets and to attend the race, there's about a 50/50 chance that I will see a good race. IMO those are pretty good odds. And, I would gladly do it if I had plenty of discretionary leisure dollars.
I'm not concerned. NASCAR is a big boy. NASCAR will live, or die, on it's own merits. IMO they grew too big during the good times. The grandstands are huge. So, how can we possibly expect the grandstands to be full during hard times? Many businesses are now having to go into "survival mode". IMO NASCAR can survive even with grandstands 1/2 full.
I gotta tell you, I am looking forward to Pocono. And, I will celebrate the fact that I am no longer in business. These are not the healthiest of times, for NONE of the business in which I was involved.

Bingo! F1 and Michelin were able to do it...I'd think Nascar could afford to as well. If it was weather related I agree it's a******shoot..but this was entirely in their control. It's a big man's game and that comes along with a big man's responsibility to it's fans...not duck and run.....
This is just my opinion...your mileage may vary...tax and license not included...void where prohibited...

NASCAR should just drop the Indy race and let Tony George try to get 225,000 fans for a sports car race in this economy. IMS gets mostly weenie fans that don't have a clue about racing and are into Danica with her hissy fits.

Rational, lucid, intellectual comments/discussions seem to be wasted on the topic of autosports on this board anymore....it's sad actually.....
