This was in the Bend paper this morning...Thought it might interest you all.....
Tree falls in Gilchrist, and disbelief follows
Couple unsure why tree fell, but the damage is extensive
At 8:30 Thursday evening, Doug and Carol Kelley were watching television at their Gilchrist home when Carol thought she heard thunder.
Carol, 59, said she didn’t believe it was thunder because the sky was clear that night. But Doug, 58, said he saw something fall outside their living room window.
Then the couple’s two-story house shook. Doug said he and his wife ran outside to find the large ponderosa pine in their front lawn had fallen over on top of three vehicles in their driveway, their garage and a neighbor’s car. The tree’s tangled roots were still attached.
The tree, which Carol said is about 100 to 150 feet tall and about 4 feet across at the bottom, uprooted from the ground and crushed the couple’s 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser, sliced through their 2008 Cedar Creek fifth-wheel trailer and damaged the hood of their 2007 Chevrolet Duramax truck.
“It was a total shock,” Doug said. “It’s not like we were having a horrendous windstorm or anything, It was a beautiful evening. There wasn’t even a breeze blowing.”

Man, that is one wimpy root system for a tree that size. I'd be looking at the other trees on my property that are close to the house...

Normally those trees have tap roots that go to China....this one apparently was ill. It's very rare to have one fall for no reason. I've seen smaller trees than that go down during heavy snowfalls. Recently Oregon's largest ponderosa pine, nicknamed "Big Red," that is 162' tall, 28.9' around and may be in excess of 500 years old had part of it break off during a storm. You never know when one will go. We have 100s of trees around our house...we keep them because they're a buffer for winds and they give us shade AND we love them!

They are lucky it didn't hit the house. Probably too much water from the lawn.

I wonder how many insurance deductibles they have to pay? If the tree hit somebody elses cars the tree owners homeowners insurance would pay. But if it hits all of your own cars, does your home owners ins pay or does the insurance on each car and the 5er have to pay?

Dee,
I used to love listening to the wind wistle through the trees in Lapine when we would visit over there. However, I must admit there was a time or two a tree would let off a horrendous crack, and I would swear something was going to come down. Don't think I would have liked that noise.
