your going to have a much bigger tire/wheel selection with the 16" size. As you found out the hard way "load range" for hauling max loads is what its all about. A load range D load range with is only 8 ply rated, is a poor choice for hauling max loads. With all the wheel manufactors out there and as long as we have used 16" wheels there should be lots on mfg out there as 16" is still the biggest seller at this time. Stick with the E load range 10 ply rated tire as that is the load range GM installed on the 2500/3500 SRW truck.
I wouldn't mess with hauling with those passenger car tire P as they are only a 4 ply rated sidewall.

Actually, my problem is that all the wheels I like (black or black teflon) are NOT made in the 16" size for my truck (8 lug). That is why I'm looking to a 17 or 18" wheel. I'm just baffled how the load ratings go down from a 16" to 17" tire but go way back up for an 18"?!?

How is the load rating on the wheels? Some 17/18 wheels won't handle the 80 psi of "E" rated tires. I believe the rating goes down because of there being less sidewall on many 17" tires. A 32" tire on a 16" wheel has a lot more side wall than the same size on a 17, just a guess, but may be the reason.

I had the Toyo MT's on my old ram (315's) and they were a sweet tire, but I'm not sure you need that aggressive of tire...I used my truck for hunting and the mud factor was high...so it worked awesome.
We have the Toyo AT's and Goodyear Wrangler with Silent Armor on our work trucks. Both are nice. I like the Goodyear's thus far. Worked great this past winter. Wrangler Silent Armor

This is easy, and complicated to.
For a long time, like 50 years, heavy duty tires had 1/2" designation, and
lighter duty tires were even. Thus the 16 1/2, 17 1/2, 19 1/2, 22 1/2
tires for trucks.
Then modern radials got better, and 16 1/2 was phased out in favor of heavy
duty 16"
Then the big rim craze happened, and lots of people wanted larger diameter
rims for the look. These carry tires with no weight capacity.
Then Ford discovered it could not fit the brakes it needed under 16" rims.
So now there are just coming out heavy duty 18" tires.
But if you want heavy duty tires, get 17 1/2 or 19 1/2 wheels, just like for
the past 50 years.
For maximum confusion, along the way, tire weight ratings changed from "Ply"
to "Load Range" to actual numbers. At the same time, the lettering system for
speed rating came into play.
As a result, the terms "Ply" and "Load Range" have no meaning at all. The only
terms that have meaning are the speed letter and the weigh rating in pounds.

I have almost exactly the same weight trailer and truck you do. I run Michellin LTX M/S E rated tires. They are great. BFG All Terrain has an E rated tire that is a great tire as well... probably better looking than the Michellin... Good Luck!

Does anyone have experience with Nitto Tires?
Specifically the Nitto Dura Grappler
LT245/75R16 E 120R 3042@80
LT285/75R16 E 126R 3750@80
I have stock 245/75R16s on my 2006 Chevy Crew Cab 4x4. I think I can go up to the 285s without any issues.

I just put a set of the Nitto Terra Grapplers on my 05 2500 HD with the stock forged alum rims. I went 285 75 16 E rated. These replaced some 285 75 16 D rated BFG AT's. So far so good, they ride well on the highway and are pretty quiet. My first time pulling will be next week. They were consdierably less $$ than the BFG's and my neighbor who owns a tire shop recommended them over the BFG's for the value. We will see how well they hold up.
