Either one if torqued properly. Generally the failures you described come from fastners that are not properly torqued when installed. I probably would use GR 8 and make sure they are torqued down properly in progressive steps that reaches the ultimate torque value desired.

I used grade 8 when raiseing my pin box. You want bolts with a tight fitting shoulder, threads through the joint area do not hold up well.

Lippert PIN Box?
For OEM values/ bolts
Lippert
Morryde Pin Box Install PDF -has a small torque value chart for both GR5 and GR8 in the common PB bolt sizes. I would consider Morryde's info pretty safe to use as a guideline.

Use this chart to help, I always use a dry bolt with a lock nut on my hitches, never lost one yet. Grade 8 is my bolt of choice also.

I just got ahold of the maker of my pin box which is a AL-KO/Sequent 21k. He said they recommend Grade 8 bolts at 110 pounds of torque. The 110 sounds really low compared to all of the charts you guys gave me. For grade 8, the average of the three charts was 204 pounds. Hmmm...

Fifth Airborne or Sidewinder or combo of both PB?
What diameter are the bolts?
Fifth Airborne installation info suggests new GR8 bolts
1/2" Bolts torque to 110
5/8" Bolts torque to 160
3/4" bolts torque to 210
Retorque at 200 miles too.

It is neither. It is an AL-KO/Sequent 21K that came on my 2009 WW. The bolts are 5/8.
