I am looking for feedback on selling used books in RV Parks.
Have any of you had experience with anyone providing such a service?
How well might it be received?

I'll bet that would go over good. I know my DW would be a customer of yours.

It might go over well. I have been to numerous campgrounds where there is a book exchange type system in rec areas or camp stores. You can take a book or two and leave a few if you want to for the next guy.

we have library's boxes in several of our larger campgrounds.....but it is a free exchange.......you might run into issues with permits or licenses.....we can't allow anyone to sell stuff in our CG's....seems a shame cause you are almost offering a service to those of us who get trapped in our rigs by weather or smoke or chipmunks.......

happy trails

Most RV parks have a book exchange, some rather extensive. In over 3 years of fulltiming I have yet to buy a book and I'm an avid reader.

I know it would not be allowed in Federal Parks - esp. National Parks.

Also private parks would have a problem with it, if they had a bookstore themselves, or if they do not allow selling on the property. The campground that I'm at would definitely have a problem with it.

I love to read, and avidly take advantage of any "library" provided by the commercial RV parks that we frequent, so I know I would be one of your customers were we to be in the same park at the same time. The only drawback that I see is that books take up space, and can get quite heavy (enclosed cargo trailer behind a motorhome, maybe?)

I tend to agree with the last two posts. The service could be very attractive but you will need to know the rules of all parks that you visit. We are in a COE park and they do not allow any kind of sales, not even a "For Sale" sign on an RV. Many commercial parks have that same type of rule so you will need to check with them first.

The second issue that I see is weight. What kind of RV do you have and where will you keep the books? Books are very heavy and an inventory of size will be a serious problem. Do you plan to tow a trailer with the inventory, or load it into the RV? You need to take great care to not over-load your RV so study the weight ratings carefully.

The next issue that I see is permits such as sales tax licenses. Each state has a different set of rules and laws on this subject. Many cities and towns require all businesses to get local permits. Now add in the fact that you are a Canadian, that also means that you first need US permits to run a business in the USA. I suggest that before you spend any money on this plan, contact your nearest consulate office for the US and ask them for advice about what permits may be required. Remember that your inventory will have to pass through customs of both countries each time you cross the border.

Thanks everyone.I truly appreciate your feedback. Your message is loud and clear..."respect your fellow RV'r". Every person has their own perspective on anything. What could be a welcome service to one could be an afront to his neighbor.
I will need to be discreet but will likely pursue this little venture once we start taking longer trips down south.

Thanks again (esp Kirk)

Granpakoot :

Forget books. Sell music cds and movie dvds.

Think about how light both of those products are, compared to books ?

One hundred music cds can be stored in one mediuam size Rubbermaid tub.

Most people have both a CD player, and a DVD player in their home , these days.

Where to buy them ? Do a Google search for " wholesale sellers of music cds " or " movie wholesalers " who will sell them to you in bulk. Pay with a credit card, and get them sent UPS, to where ever you are staying.

Where to sell them ?

Forget camp grounds, too many headaches . Look for flea markets, instead. Sell 5 cds for $5 each and the days rent for the space is paid. If you buy music cds for 3 or 4 dollars each and sell them for 8, you make a profit. On the DVD movies the wholeasale prices are higher at about 8 to 10 each, but they can sell for up to 19 each, for newer releases .

Portable and very much in demand, and easy to sell. Just sit and take the money. Cash sales only, no credit cards or cheques.

Better than books, for sure.

Like this idea ? Let me know.

Jim B. Toronto.
