Ocean Lakes gets our vote too. We were at Lakewood once and did not like it. We were away from the ocean and were in a block of terrible tiny sites. If you aren't requiring sewer, Huntington Beach State Park is a great place. Some sites are more private not directly on the ocean, but most sites were pretty decent. We just gave up a front row at Ocean Lakes 4th of July next year for a site at Huntington Beach SP. That is how much we liked HBST.
Definitely need to get your reservations now.

We go to Ocean Lakes every year for a month in the spring. They do book up quick and you can make your reservation 18 months in advance. All of the sites are pull thru with full hookups. You can book online now and see the dimensions of each site.

We go to Ocean Lakes every year. The others mentioned are fine, but I think the overall amenities at Ocean Lakes has them all beat. OL gets a lot of bad press on here concerning the golf cart traffic. OL is the largest oceanfront campground in the US. They have close to 900 transient campsites, and tons of houses, etc. in other parts of the campground. I think golf carts are a neccesary thing, due to the imense size of this place. Could you imagine that many vehicles driving around in there?
So, if you think the golf carts would be an issue for you, then you need to stay away from OL, PL, and Lakewood. The carts really don't bother us, but that is us. MBTP would be the place for you. They don't rent carts, and I have stayed there also, and it is a nice place. As others have advised, you better decide and call today, because they do book fast.

We are going down this Friday to Piriteland. My brither in law has a 35' fith wheel and pulls it with his toterhome. 63' total. Sounds like it should be fun getting it parked !

Another vote for Ocean Lakes! If I had to stay anywhere else, I'd stay home instead. Was at Lakewood one time ... very unhappy there. We wouldn't even consider staying at Pirateland after a drive through.

We just came back from one week at Pirateland. We stayed in a premium ocean site. My sister and her family met us in their motorhome. We all had a great time there and would definitely return. The park was packed. Surprisingly as crowded as it was there was never any problems and the entire park was very quiet after 10pm. The beach was awesome and the pool and lazy river ride were great. We never had a problem getting in or out with our 40ft DP and my brother-in-law and sister didn't either with their 37ft motorhome. Sure there are golf carts but nothing that created a problem. The golf cart parade in the evening was a hoot and we participated every night. Met some great groups of people. We spoke to several campers that have stayed at both Lakewood and Ocean Lakes and they all seemed to prefer Pirateland. We have not stayed at either. I did not hear very nice things at all about Lakewood. A few people claimed it was a very religious type of atmosphere with people and kids going around to sites with pamphlets promoting their beliefs. So I guess its all what you are looking for in a campground. All I know is we all had a blast and are planning to go back again next year.

Ocean Lakes all the way..We go every year..I take my own golf cart with me. We love it. Great for the kids as well..You will not have enough time to participate in all of the activities, so enjoy your stay, it goes by quickly..

The one negative I've heard about the others is the over-abundance of golf carts running through the campground (but can't speak from personal experience).
