The best campground is the Baddeck Cabot Trail CG. It's right at the beginning of the Cabot Trail. I would plan on at least two days to travel around the trail. The campground is in an ideal location to do this.

Here's a link to the Nova Scotia Tourism website. Click on "Accommodations" to do a search for places to stay on the Cabot Trail. You can also click on "Plan your trip" and "Travel Guides" to order maps and guides, although it may be too late to get them in the mail. You can also pick up the travel guides and maps at the Welcome Centers. There is a big Welcome Center just over the border from New Brunswick near Amherst.

I agree that two days is the minimum to drive the Cabot Trail. Also, you are wise to leave the trailer in a campground when driving the section between Wreck Cove and Cheticamp. We were able to drive that section with our MH only by making good use of lower gears going both up and down the very steep grades.

We did the drive in one day and regretted it - you do get to see the main scenery but there is no "relaxing" about it - no hiking - no lingering to enjoy the real flavour of the park or communities. We base camped in Baddeck which we enjoyed - but do agree that a two-day minimum is needed to feel good about the trail - more if you want to hike trails. Sorry - no suggestions on where you might stay en-route - but I think if we were to do it again we would be seeking out bed-and-breakfasts.

You can camp right within the heart of the highlands at Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
Another place you might consider along the way around the Cabot Trail is Meat Cove Campground. Meat Cove is literally at 'the end of the road'... the most Northerly community in Nova Scotia. It's a little out of the way, but in my opinion, it's one of the places that should be included with any trek around the Cabot Trail...even if for nothing more than just to say you've been to Meat Cove.

Last year we took 5 days and needed every day. Penty of campgrounds and motels.

Fulltimers. No more grass to cut, no more leaves to rake, and can move if we don't like our neighbors.

States we spent time in, drive throughs not marked.
