When I was 27 I lost my white cat (Mr. Whitey)to old age, that I had gotten as a kitten when I was 12. When he died I vowed to never get another cat again..

5 weeks ago I ate my words when my son and I found a seriously injured kitten in our yard. He had been attacked by a Tom cat and he somehow managed to crawl under our gate and was stagging in our yard.

He was very small, and I picked him up with a towel and immediately called our Vet. I made an appointment to take him in to be seen to see if there was anything they could do to save him.

His eyes were covered with gunk and with a warm wet tissue I tried to get as much as the gunk off of his eyes that I could.

The Vet managed to get the rest of the gunk off of his eyes and told me that the kitten was maybe 2-3 weeks old and then asked me if I would like to leave the kitten there with them and they would try to see if he could be saved, but he would not get round the clock care or did I want to claim him as my own.

I did not hesitate, I claimed him. We went home with a small bottle and a can of KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement) as well as ointment to place in his eyes for the infection.

It has been a long 5 weeks, but between my son and I we got up every two-hours to try to bottle feed him, but he did not know how to suck so my son took an insulin syringe and broke off the needle and we fed him with the syringe.

We did this for 5 days and later that day we noticed that the kitten had areas on his little body that were swollen and the one on his left rump was oozing puss. So off to the vet we went, the wounds were bite wounds that became infected. The Vet told us that the kitten was not with his mother long enough to develop antibodies from her milk to fight infection. The kitten was then given less than a 20% chance of survival. The Vet kept him there for the day and cleaned out his wounds, and later that day we took him home with ointment to place on his wounds as well as oral antibiotics.

Since the kitten is a Blue Lynx Point Siamese mix, we named him Chuay Chan which translates to help me in Thai.

Here is a picture of Chuay when we first found him

Here is a picture of Chuay after the Vet cleaned his eyes

Many people know that I have two Shar-Pei, and I was amazed by how these two dogs have adopted this little kitten as their own. It is amazing how a 50 pound female Pei and a 63 pound male Pei can be so gentle with a tiny kitten.

When we first found Chuay he weighed 10 ounces, today he now weighs 2.5 pounds, and he is making progress.

Here is a picture of Chuay that I took this morning. His right eye has healed completely, his left eye, however, may not be able to be saved. We took him to see the Vet again this past Monday and I was given Neo-Poly-Dex ointment as well as Terramycin ointment for his eye. I take him back to the vet next Monday to determine if they will have to surgically remove his eye. If they have to do surgery they will neuter him at the same time, if not then he will be neutered when he is four months old or four pounds which ever comes first.

My son and I made a youtube video about our experience with Chuay..Chuay's video

Having this little kitten come into my life was a gift, it brought out the compassion that I have never felt before. It has also made me realize what is really important in life, and that is caring and helping other's.

My son now has a volunteer job where he goes to the Vet's office to help out as needed. He loves to help with animals.

The Vet that we use also takes in injured wild animals and rehabs them so that they can return to the wild once they have been healed of all wounds.

Wow. Sounds like you have a little fighter there! Good for you, and good for Chuay Chan! May he live many years and continue to give you much joy.

I have been trying to get more pictures of Chuay, however, since he has more energy than he knows what to do with all I have been capturing on my camera is a Grey blur that has been running at top speed in front of me

It is so wonderful to see how much energy he now has. The first week we had him he was so listless, and I was so afraid we would loose him. All he did was sleep all the time and we had to wake him up for his feedings. After feedings I would place him on my chest close to my heart and rock him and talk softly to him. I would talk about anything, like what his life would be like with two adult humans and two teenage humans and two dogs who thought he was their puppy.

Now getting him to sit still is not an easy task, he eats, plays hard for a couple of hours and then crawls under something to take a nap. Right now he is batting at my male Shar-Pei and the Pei is making grunting noises and wagging his tail.

Chuay has been a blessing.
