Has anyone tried the new Mexico Road Map that Garmin has out for its GPS units? The Garmin website says it's available as of the 2nd quarter of 2008.

I just bought it on EBay. The seller claimed it worked great, but have you ever heard an Ebayer say it is a pile of c--p? I'll know better after the winter but sounds OK. We used Streets and Trips up until now and it was terrible so won't take much to be better than that. We'll still keep the Guia Roji handy!!!

Good luck.

Dave A, please give us a followup report on the card you bought off eBay. I was looking at the add myself and would be interested to hear how it works.

I'll be in Mexico sometime in early November - but just over the border. I'll try it in Progresso and let you know then. We'll be driving to Zihuatenjo in early January. That'll be the real test. Once I get the chip, I'll have a look at some of the spots we're quite familiar with and see what the detail is like and post that. I also bought the chip for Europe. It looks good. We're heading there in September.

If you watch Ebay, you can pick them up quite reasonably priced. I paid $50.00 for the Mexican chip, delivery in. It is a Garmin original. The European chip is a knock off but it still works good. A 2 Gig SD card is around $20.00 by itself so I thought price was OK.

I personally prefer Streets and Trips while driving in USA but we now do most of our driving in the car and leave motor home here in Canada so managing a notebook, inverter, GPS sensor etc. in a CR-V is a bit of a mess.

I'll post updates as I know anything more.

Hey I am also interested and will follow this thread. Would this be just city maps? I could not find a new edition on the Garmin site. I also see that Global Maps has one that is suppose to work on Garmin, Has anyone used this one?

If you click on the "On the Road Maps" tab on the Garmin site and then on the "City Navigator - Mexico" tab it will take you to the description/details of the new map.

Here's part of Garmin's description:
-------------------
Navigate the streets in Mexico with confidence using City Navigator Mexico NT. With this detailed data, you can literally travel to a new city, look up hotels, restaurants, and other services, and use your compatible Garmin GPS to guide you there — without stopping for directions! This data includes fully routable maps and comes preprogrammed on CD and microSD card with SD adapter. See the product compatibility table (right) for a list of products that Garmin recommends with this software.

City Navigator Mexico NT features include:

* New detailed coverage for Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey
* Postal code coverage for major urban areas
* Additional 250,000 km of road coverage, including new link roads like MEX-57 from MEX-40 to Eagle Pass, Texas, USA
* Includes detailed maps containing highways, interstates, residential roads and other navigation features
* Displays points of interest such as:
o food and drink
o lodging
o attractions
o entertainment
o shopping
o emergency services and more
* Will automatically create point-to-point routes on compatible Garmin GPS units
* Contains turn restrictions and speed categories

There is another alternative. It is the Mexico GPS Atlas found at this link: http://www.mexicomaps.com/mexico_gps.las........ession=mmid:477B8CA114120140C1iHvIB22A8C

I have used this map on my Garmin and traveled extensively in Mexico and the Baja. It is the most detailed maps available. Almost every city of any size had street level detail. There are also alot of POIs searchable on the maps.

I have looked at the Garmin Mexico maps and they are not detailed. Only a few cities are included. I do not recommend them.

The Mexico GPS Atlas never got me lost. I highly recommend it.

I have been following every reference to GPS for Mexico and am still confused.
On the link you posted there seems to be two packages available.
The Mexico GPS Atlas 2008 v3.11 by BiciMapas and
The City Navigator Mexico NT 2008 by Garmin
both about $100.

The Garmin comes on a CD or a SD card.
The BiciMapas is a 250 MB download that requires Garmin MapSource software. There is a note that says it is not an immediate download but needs several hours to generate the unlock code.
So then what? I haven't done this before. It will be on my laptop and then I load it on my Garmin, or do I load it on an SD card?

I was searching for more details which led to this site:
http://www.gpsinformation.org/jack/cruise/cruise-a.html
It shows a comparison of the BiciMapas coverage, which includes the whole country, and the Garmin coverage which seems much less.
Do I have it right?

The BCIMAPs software Mexico GPS Atlas is much more detailed and contains a lot of pois (hotels, restraunts, Pemex stations, etc.)

You order through the website. You must provide the Unit Id of the Garmin GPS when you order the sofware. A few hours later you will be provided (through email) a link to download the map and an unlock code. It also contains complete and detailed instructions for loading the software, first on your computer and then to your Garmin GPS through Mapsource. You will need to have Mapsource on your computer.

Most people are receiving Mapsource from Garmin for free. Just call there Tech Support number and ask for a way to manage POIs on your Garmin.

In order to use the Mexico GPS Atlas you will need a Garmin GPS that allows you to load additional maps, Mapsource and a cable to connect the GPS to your computer with a USB cable. Most of the Garmin Nuvis have this ability though I am not familiar with each model.

I have the Garmin Nuvi 750. Mapsource allows me to build complex routes with multiple stops and then load the route into the Nuvi. I then select that route and follow it to my destination.

I have traveled from Texas to Alaska and back. I have traveled all over Mexico. All using the routing features of the Nuvi 750.

There is no way I could have found my way all over Mexico without the GPS Atlas. I bought the most detailed paper maps and they do not compare to the Mexico GPS Atlas for ease of use. Navigating your way through Mexican cities like Hermasillo are very complex. There is no way I could have done it with a paper map; too much traffic and too many unmarked turns.

I highly recommend the Mexico GPS Atlas from BCIMAPS. I have done a lot of research into maps for Mexico. BCIMAPS are the best GPS maps, hands down. Did I mention that these maps are created and updated by a group out of Mexico City?

I have no affiliation with the website owner or Bcimaps. Just a satisfied user.
