We plan to travel across Canada next year and had planned to begin about mid May from Edmonton to Dawson Creek and the ALCAN hwy. I've just recently read a Blog from someone who was in the Whitehorse area about mid May and he said most of the campgrounds, restaurants and sites to see were closed, he also said the fuel stops were also closed. With this in mind I'd like to know what would be the best time to travel across the ALCAN. I'd really appreciate any advise I can get, thanks. Bob W.

Edmonton to AK is hardly "across Canada" LOL
Yes - it varies from year to year but I would think you wll be safer about a month later. When we did our AK trip we were in a blizzard crossing the border between Glacier and Waterton on June 27!

What I remember for that time of the year is that people live there.

Not across but sorta up through..
Best time is when fuel is 90 cents a liter..... (ain't gonna happen)
If your headed toward Alaska I'd not cross the border before the first day of June and I wouldn't rush on my way north.
If your moving east / west anytime after the 24th of May and all the campgrounds are open.

Even if the facilities along the Alaska Highway haven't opened, fuel is still available in the towns along the road. Just fill up at the towns and things will be fine. As long as you are not looking for full service campgrounds, you'll have plenty of places to stop for the night along the road.
Weather is the other issue and can be anything. We always felt that if things go to sh*t on us, we stop until they get better, so your approach here will be what you're comfortable with. Early spring will definitely increase the chances of seeing more animals along the roads, and give you more of a feel of the wild places.
You might try to plan things out using a Milepost, and contact folks now to see when they open. It will also allow you plan stops and gas up points.
Good luck. We'll be heading north with you about mid May. Our third trip in 4 years.

I crossed into Canada from Oroville, WA to Osoyoos, BC on May 4, 2005 and onto Alaska (southern crossing) by May 8. No sign of snow on any of the main roads that year, and no shortage of open fuel stations, campgrounds, or stores.
By traveling slowly north from south, central Alaska, I avoided most of the crowds and all the mosquitoes for more than a month.

We left Denver the last week in May this year. We crossed the border at Grand Forks at the end of the week, and we had no problems. We took the Cassiar north and then west to Haines Junction. The Haines Highway was very winter like at higher altitudes, but no snow on the road.
