Is anyone familiar with the Equus 3145 Ford Digital Code Reader? I have a 1997 Dolphin built on a Ford F53 ... a Ford tech looked at the plug and said it was definitively an EEC-IV (as do all the old posts). I found this Code reader, but Equus saids it is for 1995 and older EEC-IV, an inquiry as to if it would work on my unit was not answered very direct. Here is the reader Code Reader
I would like to take my old unit west where distances between repair facilties get rather great ... being able to read codes would be a real advantage. Also, I would like to monitor transmission temperatures, I have read older posts about installing a guage. However, I found in the Equus manual codes that suggest the transmission does have a sender unit to the EEC .... (hope this table comes out)
TEST
CODE !CONDITION! FAULT CODE DEFINITION
56 !O,C ! (Truck Only)Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor Fault
68 !C ! (Truck Only)Transmission Oil Temperature Over Heat
636 !O,R ! Transmission Oil Temperature Higher or Lower than
! ! Expected
652 !C ! Transmission Over Temp Condition
Conditions=
O = Key Off Engine Off (KOEO) code
R = Key Off Engine Running (KOER) code
C = Continuous Memory (CM) code
Any experience with the Equus reader or insight into the codes and how data could be captured?

A 1997 Ford will have the EEC V system
This is the EEC V diagnostic connector.

The EEC IV connector looks like this.

I can't help with that unit but if it works out, I will buy it as my code reader has the flashing lights only that you need to write down. If you lose track, it's a pain.

As Home Skillet points out, the easiest way to tell is from the connector. Assuming you have eec-iv, you won't get any real time info from that test connector. To do that you would have to go to the computer directly. Your best bet for this is to find some Mustang or SHO forums, and see what they use for real time. Of course, this assumes that your computer monitor tranny temp (it may or may not). Most people who want this type of info are looking to see if the o2 sensor are going closed loop, what the injector pulse width is and so on.
Your best bet is to just install a tranny temp gauge and keep the code reader if your MH throws a code.

It's an ECC-IV ... the V is the OBD-II. On the heavy duty trucks, Ford did not introduce the V or OBD-II until the V10 Engine. I am not sure if Ford got an exemption or if the Gov Reg's did not cover the heavy duty. Chevy introduced the OBD-II on the motor home platform at the same time they put it on the cars.
I sure wish it was an OBD-II !!! Even the owners manuals for the F53's are wrong because they are generic. Sometimes Ford Customer service will even tell you that it is OBD-II.

This is the note I just got back from tech support about the the Equus 3145 Ford Digital Code Reader and the F53 V8 ... I even gave them my VIN.
We do not offer a code reader for this vehicle. I hope this has answered your question. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to reply to this e-mail or call one of our ASE Certified Staff Members at 1-800-544-4124. We are available Monday through Friday 5am - 6pm Pacific Time.

I also called them, they said it does not work beyond 1995 and on vehicles over 8500 GVW.
So, what brand is your blinking light reader?

My reader is an Actron CP9015 code reader.
This is what is looks like:

I still think that Equus model will work. Why don't you buy it and test it out and let me know.
BTW, you can buy that Equus model (3145 reader and 3149 cable which is nice to have but not necessary) at Amazon for around 25 bucks.

Look at the picture home skillet posted. This will cause the CHECK ENGINE light to flash the codes as well. However you can get the EEC-IV scanner pretty cheap now. When you scan it you will receive current issue and stored issues.
Unfortunately the EEC-IV doesn't offer the active information as the EEC-V does ( which was release with V10s) then you could use the SCAN GAUGE product connected to a PC. There is a product out there that will display more information but its more for engine fine tuning and not general health, like tranny temps.
Becareful when connecting or playing around the connector. I accidenly disconnected an air line while disconnecting hte scanner. The motorhome ran terrible!! until I found the loose air line. I though I blew up the CPU.

Pirate,
Interesting your unit came from Actron ... they have a CP9145 that is advertized to read both OBD II, Ford EEC-IV, etc. I sent them a note and they said it would not work on my unit. They send me to OTC who has a unit that OTC said would work, but retail is over $800 ... a little pricy to carry for just in case.
I would also belive the Equus and Actron would work but they would not have the code interpretation for some of the heavy duty codes associated with the E4OD.
There is a Kastar unit that is sold cheap on ebay that appears to be nothing more than a light and some wires. Would make a little easier than the paper clip method of counting the flashes of the Check Engine light.
I read a lot threads where the road service starts replacing things without reading the computer ...

I'm so convinced the Equus unit will work I ordered one. I didn't like having to count light flashes using the Actron. The guys at Ford Truck Enthusiasts recommend the Equus unit too.
