Retirees planning to leave soon to see the Rockies in our new Silverado towing our new Cougar fifth wheel. Thought we "hustle" on up to Jasper by way of Bend and Coeur D'alene and then a have a liesurely trip south by way of Banff, Glacier, Yellowstone, Tetons, and ???. We're hoping to do this over several weeks, taking us into October, weather permitting.
We would really appreciate hearing any advice from you who have been there, done that, be it highlights from your trip, where to camp, availability of diesel in Canada, September and October weather in the Rockies (on our trailer it says polarized, don't really know how that translates to real life conditions), roads that are too steep, need for reservations, etc.
I'm really learning a lot from this forum, my thanks to you contributors.

Many CGs in the northern Rockies will close by October. I would strongly recommend you get a Trailer Life or Woodalls directory, which lists most CGs, with a brief description & rating and some contact information. Haven't been to the Canadian Rockies yet, but I do know that Yellowstone will be getting cold in October (nighttime temps below freezing actually starting to occur now) so you'll need to allow for that when it comes to your water system. Snow is a definite possibility that far north, especially at the higher elevations (including Glacier & Yellowstone).

I would'nt be going too leisurely to the rockies up here. The snow does come early up here. I few years back it snowed in the middle of August. Not just a dusting but a few inches!!! Fall weather is unpredictable but can be nice to see the trees etc in their various colors.

Boy - it seems some folks just don't want you to do that!! sI say - go! but be prepared for a short storm any time ( it snowed in CO high country Friday!!) Your rig should handle it. if it does snow - stay plut for a day - or even an hour or two!. Bend to Couer d'Alene is fairly boring. From ther go nortah on 95 to Cranbrook BC and on to Radium. Two choices there - both good. 1: keep north to Golden then E. on Trans Canada to lake Louise. Use that cg as a base for a day or two and explore the Icefields Parkway to at least the Icefields or even to Jasper. That can be made round trip in a long day. Stop at Bow lke - Num Ti Jah Lodge for a bit of history and coffee, also stop at the top of Bow Summit and take the short walk to the Peyto Lake overlook. Lots of othe great views along the parkway. still from L. Louise - ride the chairlift!; a day in to explore the town of banff and surroundings - Lake Minewanka loop etc. Take 1A rather than the TCH. Ready to head south? back to the castle Mtn. junction then south on 93 back into BC. top to explore marble Canyon, then numa Falls and the Kootenay valley overlook on Sinclair Pass and back to Radium and south to Cranbrook. East on 3 to elko and south into MT and head for Glacier and onward.
Choice 2 (at Radium) turn NE on 93 ovr to the Kootenay Valley in Kootenay N.P. and continue to Castle Mtn. jct with istops at Numa Falls and marble Canyon (and others as you see wonderous scenery!). At the junction take 1A west to Lake Louise for a few days exploring (as above). make sure you go over to Yoho NP to see Emerald Lake and Takkakaw Falls. After touring ( as above) ready to head soguth? Take the TCH east to Cochrane, south on 22 to Pincher Creek and south to Waterton NP.After exploring Waterton go south into Glacier to St. mary and explore that Park. Then you are free to headhome!!
Enjoy, John
PS - My choice would always be #2! PM me for any questions.

Don't doddle too long. Click here for Yellowstone facilities closing dates. And those assume snow hasn't forced an earlier date.
