I have never tipped in a campground for anything and sure hate to get that started. We were owners of a Bed and Breakfast for 10 years and we sometimes got tips, but never really expected them. When I was much, much younger and a waiter, I used to work real hard for tips and sometimes give out free advise to new wait staff on how to get tips. One favorite thing I will say to a waitress is when givng her my credit card is, "I'll need change for a dollar so i can leave you a tip." That usually wakes them up.

With comments like that I do know there is no hope in this world!

I would tip only for any work that is done beyond and over the normal duties of their job!

I haven't tipped in the campground for propane or being shown to my site. Did tip a kid once who lugged a heavy bird bath to my van, offered him money for a soda to go with his lunch. Tips when eating out, depends on the service. I get a kick out of delis and other stores that have a tip jar next to the cash register... sometimes I point at them and ask why the tip jar. They usually just shrug their shoulders. My thought, tips are for service beyond the normal effort for the purchase or delivery of the product.

I only tip food servers and barbers. Oh, and commissary baggers because they get no salary at all--tips only. At campgrounds, where the price of propane is usually way over the price at other outlets, I figure that the markup includes the salary for the worker bee. Actually, I think that the old custom was to not tip the owner of an establishment--if your barber or hair dresser owns the shop, no tip for him or her, but their employees are eligible for a tip. At most campgrounds, the person filling the propane tank is the proprietor, so another reason for not tipping.

AAA drivers? Every time I've needed their services, they are usually in the truck and gone before I can even get around to thanking them (there is one that I'd have tipped triple digits to, but he declined--another story...).

As a former Government employee, I've been given MANY tips, but none of them can be repeated here.

LOL!

I was going to report back anyway as the other day, as I'm sitting looking out the window when some new folks are being led into the park, after the guide shows them their site and helps to back them in, the guy palms him "something" and he didn't look like he tried to refuse whatever it was that was being handed off to him. So, I guess some do it ...but it sounds as if most don't.

I tipped a very nice workamper that helped me R&R my 85 lbs. microwave for me to repair it. My bride was at her Mom's (2500 miles away) and not able to assist. All my other neighbors in the nice park had "bad backs"! This guy was very nice and obviously helpful. He refused my tip and I forced him to take it. He finally did. I don't think he needed the coin but he was so helpful in my time of need, otherwise I don't tip in parks. If something outstanding has been done, I will usually fix dinner or invite the folks for happy hour! You meet some fine folks that way. Tom

I'm not sure what tipping has to do with better educations equating to better jobs. It's true, of course. If I'd have gotten an MD and specialized in brain surgery I can almost guaranty that I'd have had a better paying job most of my life.

But I know lots of bartenders and waitresses with bachelor degrees. My daughter worked as a waitress while earning her degree in pharmacy. Sure enough. When she graduated she got a better job.

I still don't know what tipping has to do with it.
