I think you will be one VERY unhappy camper while driving.
I pulled a similar trailer (232) with a V8 Dodge Durango for about 6 months. It was less than thrilling.

If the numbers work out, and you want/need more trailer then you currently have, by all means upgrade. You will not hear me say anything bad about a 23B, we own one and LOVE IT. I would caution though that just because the book says you can do it does not mean it will be a pleasant experience. You might want to go in with the mindset that you might need to upgrade your TV. We had the option of putting the brake controller on the wifes I6 Trailblazer or my V8 Tahoe. Technically both SUV's can handle the HTT. Even thought her car is 6 years newer than mine, we opted for the Tahoe. I am from the school that you take all the TV you can get. There is also the thought that the V6 works harder and will wear quicker than a bigger engine. I do not think that wheelbase matters a ton. I guess if you were in really high sidewinds it might, but if it is blowing that bad, stop and have a cup of coffee and wait for the weather to change.

I'm using a '04 Grand Cherokee 4.7 HO as a TV for my 23SS. I've found it adequate for the short trips I've taken here in the mountains of Western MD, and we have some pretty decent grades. My first LONG trip is coming this Thursday to Myrtle Beach. I guess I'll really find out how it handles at that time. Mileage can be a "beach" with a head wind - drops to 5-6 mpg, but I'm usually getting 10-11 mpg through the mtns without a head wind.

Thanks for the insights, I don't see any point in owning a larger truck or SUV with 4 dollar gas, so I'm going to just fix up the 16 footer (it's in the shop for the axle and I was tempted to cut my losses so to speak) and keep on going with the present setup. I do like getting over 12 mpg on most of our trips, I think the addition of some better shocks would also help firm up the truck.

Make that 6400 pounds maximum towing capacity for the V6 (Vee Six) 4Runner, not 7000 pounds. Will still keep a 16 footer rolling. Even something like a Jayco 23B will be fine.

I get between 11 and 13 towing my 23B. I don't know about yours, but my '02 w/ 4.10 gears gets the best gas mileage running between 50 and 60 mph, whether I'm towing or not.

We tow a ROO 25RS with a V8 Envoy. We went on a 3000 mi trip this summer from SoCal to Yellowstone and it towed great. I don't think we ever once thought that we needed more truck for the trailer.

I weigh in (no pun intended) with the pro side on this one. My 2003 Nissan pathfinder (3.5 V6)is quite happy with our Jayco 23B. As one poster mentioned there are some must haves to tow safely (and I have them all) I believe my pathfinder is about the same wheelbase (maybe a bit less)as your TV. We are right at the limit on all specs which is definitely not ideal... but we don't sway, we stop well even in sudden stop situations, we can keep 50mph on the steep grades in the White Mountains with a wee bit of pedal left for emergencies and we don't run hot. We do burn a lot of gas. Between 9 - 11 mpg depending on terrain and wind. I wasn't ready for a major TV upgrade and with this spike in gas prices I may never go bigger.
Happy trails

I did this. I had a 1998 6-cylinder 4Runner and towed a 23b. As posted above, I have dual-cam weight-distributing hitch installed and set-up by the dealer, and NO, you won't win any races. It does meet the weight limits, but just. Never really had any problems, it didn't like come back to NJ from OC, Md, but that was as much me as anything, I think I was pushing it a bit on the pedal. I just wanted to get home!
I recently got a Nissan Titan Crew Cab, with the family growing up, the Runner was shrinking. It IS MUCH nicer towing, I Do have to admit!
Good luck, and be safe, no matter what you decide!
