We were boondocking this week in a friend's yard and after 3 days
needed to dump. We went to a nearby campground and inquired what
the charge would be to dump a 5-8 gallon black water tank. No
gray water. Their standard dumping charge is $20. Now, I can
see paying $20 if I had 40 gallons or so of gray/black water,
but after explaining what we had, the charge was still $20.

Understandably, they do not want you to dump if not camping.
We were on Prince Edward Island and ended up going to the Nat.
Park and using their dump station.

I would have paid $l0, but am I wrong thinking $20 is a bit much???

The local RV park here just spent $70K to hook into the city system. (Yes, you read that number correctly.) That pretty much explains their charges.

$20 to dump an 8-gallon black water tank is a rip off. If it were a big bus, maybe. But for a small truck camper with a tiny black water tank, pure rip off.

It's hard to see how anyone could expect them to charge "by the gallon" for dumping because that would open up the proverbial 'can of worms' and cost them a lot more to try and MONITOR how large your tanks are or which ones you'll be dumping. You said it right when you said "they don't want you to dump if you're not camping" so they charge an amount that discourages you from doing so. Seems like a perfectly logical way of pricing to me and it did exactly what they wanted it to do, send you somewhere else to dump. You did what I would have done when you heard the price but there is no reason they should HAVE to be fair. It's only a rip off if you paid it.

The State parks here in Colorado are now charging $20.00 if you are not staying there. They really don't want you to dump and for good reason. In many of the areas where there is a city close by parks are charged for their sewer based upon how much water you use. That is the case in my home town. As was stated previously it cost a lot of money to install leach fields and meet city/county codes when installing a septic system. It makes sense to me that if your not staying at the park you pay or go somewhere else.

$20 seems a little excessive for your tank size but their policy is most likely a one size fits all deal and as you observed the fee is designed to do exactly what it did in your case. Keep people who haven't paid to camp in their park from making the park incur added cost of operation.

If the park's dump is on a septic system or holding tank having non-campers dump their tanks will increase the frequency of the park having to pay someone to come by to pump it out. Also there is a greater chance of a non-camper trying to sneak a a tank containing hazardous waste into their system (some businesses will go to amazing lengths to get rid of their waste) which would get VERY expensive for the park to deal with.

Why didn't you just dump your tank down the sewer cleanout at your friends place?

Not to brag but this is a perfect example of one of the advantages of the cassette toilet. Besides being able to obviously use an RV dump, I can easily dump mine down the cleanout or into a household toilet among other readily available options.

To me I understand the charge but also I would think people would be somewhat flexible in their business decisions based on the size of the tank.If it were my business I would be a bit more accomidating,if someone was a jerk about it well I would probably charge you the 20 bucks.Seems like an easy 10bucks.Tough call because this person may have had problems in the past -who knows.

A local CG here charges $20, which, by the way, is what a one-night stay would cost (with free dumping in that case).

Another area CG charges $10, but is out of town a bit.

The state park only charges $5. Guess where I go now?

But, as with any governmental entity, I had to call twice to confirm. The first person I spoke to said you had to stay there to dump (I knew better because the state web site said differently), the second person I spoke to knew that $5 was right.

As with pretty much everything in our society, we are at their mercy. We pay what they demand, or go elsewhere.

How about taking a 20, 30, or 40 gallon tank on wheels with you next time.
