Check the air filter, fuel, the code (light should be blinking after it shuts down) and altitude adjustment.

It could have a leaking oil pressure sensor. That would shut the fuel pump down, as it should. They can be bad from factory, as they are a poorly designed pressure chamber that sometimes allows them to leak. Then the signal cuts the fuel. Look for oil under it as a sign of leak. They are about the size of a large spark plug and have two wires going to them.

T-Bone. . . let me know what I can do to help. Sounds like some good suggestions so far. I wouldn't have thought of the oil pressure sensor.
. . .
I did a search. . .
Here is an answer - interesting that the starter won't keep running. . .
Answer:
Oil pressure or level sensor is a possibility. Both those sensors are bypassed in the start position. Keep the start button pushed down when it tries to run and see if it will go then. The starter will kick out even if you hold the button down, different from your car. If it stays running then one of the safety sensors is bad. If it does not then you probably have a carburator/fuel/choke problem. Good luck.
Got it here:

More of the same type stuff:

Here's one on over-run. If the generator is reving too fast it will shut-down.

And one more: Link to Onan. See page 29 of the attached - Trouble-shooting guide:

When I bought my trailer it did the exact same thing. Also an Onan 4000 that was almost new (it had 8 hours on it). After much trouble shooting it was clearly a fuel problem. I took the trailer to a generator service place here in town and within a couple hours I got a call that it was fixed good as new. The guy said there was a pinched fuel line back behind the computer and that I probably would have never found it. I hated to pay the bill but I'v not had another problem with my generator since.

One thing you may want to check as well is the oil level. I agree with Dune that it sounds as though you could possibly have a failed sensor. One more thing many people don't think about is the fuel going bad and clogging the carb. If you plan on storing your trailer, you should run it out of fuel, or drain the carb bowl.
