Ocean Waves is nice and small and by far the least expensive unless you go with no hook-ups in the NPS campgrounds. NPS campgrounds are not too bad. Ocean Waves is really hard to get reservations. Camp Hatteras and the KOA each are nice and have their pros and cons. I use all of the above, just depends on the time of the year and the reason I am going down for (meet friends, fishing, to save money, etc.)

Glad to hear about the new campground. I live in coastal NC and glad to see you do not have to drive 30 miles down the beach to get a campsite. Planning on going there in Dec. and paddling the a little in the area.

We spent a week at Camp Hatteras (could not get in Ocean Waves) on a corner site. I think kids on bicycles hit the tail light on the truck and a running light on the trailer. Both were broken when I went to hook up and leave. We came home late one evening, about 11:30 and were almost hit by kids on bikes. The campground is a great place to stay but beware of the bikes. Should not be a problem in September as the kids will be back in school. Get a site that is not on a corner.

We checked out The Refuge last week when down there on the rental house vacation with the family. The name may be overstating it a bit, but the place was nicely done. Decent sized sites, but not a tree in the place that we could see. We didn't go all the way to the water, there may be some down there. Close in to Nags Head, just one light past Pirates Cove. The rates seem high, but hey, it's the beach. Well, almost. I almost got from their site that they are aiming to be an annual place, not daily/weekly. Anyway, it's one more place to choose from, and we need to encourage new campgrounds.

We were at Hatteras KOA a couple weeks ago and it was great. We couldn't get Ocean Waves. I thought the staff at Koa was great and it was kid friendly-I have an eight year old. We plan to go back there next year.

They seem to run a special on a block of sites on the sound side in camp H.

6 times at Camp Hatteras and have never had any issues with bikes. Highly recommend it.
Life is too short to spend it all in one place!

We stayed at Frisco Woods last October and thought it was a nice campground. The sunsets on the sound were magnificent.

We were traveling the east coast for 3 weeks last October....was amazing driving our 32 ft RV n toad onto those ferries!!! We had no idea where we were going to end up.....but when we got to Okracoke...we found Beachcomber CG which was just fine for us. We left our RV there as we explored the other nearby place, like Hatteras.
Was not a great cg....but suited our needs for 3 nights. We used our own facilities....cg had water and electric....and was decently priced.
We explored some of the other cgs also. Would have been pretty hot without electricity for AC.
