Hi Moisheh,

To compound the confusion, what a vehicle owner "thinks" his RV is worth may not be even close to what a Mexican underwriter is prepared to pay. Figures can be tossed around in the paperwork but when and if it comes time to settle, then sometimes a claimant will be in for a rude shock. If someone has come up with an answer to this I should would appreciate hearing about it. I know of two cases where nearly new motorhomes were lost (rollover). Even though the owners thought they had adequate collision insurance, they ended up getting about seventy-five percent of what the policy was written for.

I know of 2 cases where the adjuster tried to "low ball" the owners. Both were settled correctly when the policy holders complained. As I have mentioned before the whole Mexican Tourist Insurnce industry is unregulated. I suppose the adjusters get a bonus if the payout can be reduced. The policies usually state that the Blue or Black book is to be used for determining values. My policies are all with Qualitas and I have not had any problems. Who was the insurer on those 2 rollovers?

We have an 06 Dutch Star and received a quote from San Xavier Mexico Insurance the office staff could not give us a quote but we received a call back from the owner and he gave me the quote - it is quite expensive but I have not been able to find another company to quote. Let me know if you have any further luck with this.

Prince George:

The only people who will give you a decent policy at a reasonable rate is Vagabundos. Should cover your 06. The limit is $150,000. When I was doing all my searching I found that almost every agent is just a sub agent of some outfit from either Scottsdale or Flagstaff. Inetrnational Insurance Group. The rates were almost the same from each agent. Maybe $100 difference maximum. Good Luck.

We use Mexico Bob @ San Xavier Insurance in Nogales. They use Mapfre Tepeyac. We had a claim on our toad a few years ago and they paid the full repair value (repaired in Acapulco). They never increased our premium either. Have never heard anything negative about them. Re the RV we are insured for $150,000 liability with $500.00 deductible for collision. upset, glass breakage, fire & natural disasters. THis includes 3rd party liability for $200,000.00 plus bodily injury. All this for $650.00 US. As we live in BC, Canada we receive a refund from ICBC, the private insurer here for the amount of time spent in Mexico. This year the refund was 879.00CAD. A profit of $182.00 which will go towards tolls this year.

The total cost for Mexican insurance for the toad and the RV was $950.00US of which we received a total refund from ICBC for $1408.00CAD. Our profit was $458.00. Needless to say we have no complaints about getting Mexican insurance.

Big C:

I had a quote from San Xavier. Their rate for $250,000 was well over $2300.00 for an annual policy and maybe $100 less for 6 months. Mexican tourist policies are never increased due to an accident. I think you may be a little confused on the collision portion. What value did you use for your unit? Surely it was not $150,000!
Thanks

Not confused, at least I don't think I am. I have the policy right here in front of me. The limit of liability is 150,00.00. This is a 6 month policy and we have used San Xavier for 7 years now. The other thing covered is total theft with 1000.00 US deductible. Have you spoken with Bob himself? He seems to be the only one who knew his stuff. We spent months comparing insurance companies and made sure to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges so as to get a complete understanding of the package we were getting. We will be ordering our 08/09 policies this week.

Big C:

Here goes again:
What value did you use for your unit? The $150,000 liability has nothing to do with repairs to your unit. Your declared value is how your rate is determined for comprehensive insurance ( collision, glass, etc.) But they will not pay more than Blue Book for a total loss. So if you did declare the value at $150,000 you are paying too much. I drop my value every year as RV's do depreciate.

Sorry I thought I was being clear.....150,000.00 declared value. We are upgrading our coach annually so have not decreased the value. This year we are doing full body paint for 15,000.00USD. We do not think what we are paying is too much, especially in view of the profit we are making from our local Canadian insurance provider. Mexican insurance essentially costs us nothing plus our tolls to/from Acapulco are 80% covered.
