We had planned on travelling from Ontario to PEI during July or August but we have been forced to change our plans. Would you advise us to wait until next summer to make the trip or would it be just as enjoyable in September?

Wow. I love PEI! We went at the end of June years ago. Was great weather and we had a fantastic time.

A lot of campgrounds in The Maritimes will be open through Thanksgiving weekend.
The fall in this part of the world is usually very lovelly, much warmer in day times than Ontario.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

We did the Maritimes in late September / early October of 2006. We did PEI, then Cape Breton, then Halifax area and then St. Andrews NB. It was beautiful with fall foliage. Also, not crowded with summer tourists.
Campgrounds/RV Parks close early for the season, especially in PEI, so we planned our trip based on availability.

The Gulf of St Lawerence freezes over on August 16th...just kidding! If you are not interested in water contact at the beach then Sep is OK except they roll in the sidewalks in Cavendish after August.

September would be my favorite time to camp in the Maritimes. The way
the summer weather has turned out....September may be our summer.

I would say go for it... as long as you can do without all the more touristy stuff. That, and your selection of campgrounds may be pared down a bit, although I'm not sure when exactly they all start closing over there. It's a perfect time for PEI if you're into cycling and golf.
Personally, I prefer camping around these parts in September... but I'm local and can do without all the seasonal shops and stuff.
I think New Glasgow Highlands Campground and Camp Cabins (one of my personal favorites) is open in September.
If you want a beach nearby, try Twin Shores Camping Area.
