I am looking at purchasing a used RV in the near future. I have found this forum an invaluable resource but I still have some confusion over the MSRP vs the NADA value.

I ran the NADA on a Class A 2006 MH (I read that you should not enter all of the 'extras' with the exception of the mileage) and I received a low retail of 94k and an average retail of 114k. I am told by the dealer that the MSRP is 135k on this MH.

The MH seems to be in great condition, but I just don't think I am getting a good offer from the dealer. I have not found many similar RVs on the other sites for comparrison, but I have seen the same make and model in the 2004 version listed in the low 80k range while the NADA value shows the low 60s for that model.

I guess my question is that the 'low retail' listed in NADA a fair price for an RV in good condition? Being so late in the year, am I better off waiting until the new 2009 models come out for NADA prices to go down on the 2006 models?

Finally, is there an RV inspection service in Central Florida that anyone would recommed if I decide to purchase from an independent seller?

Thanks in advance!

MSRP does not apply to used vehicles... only new.

NADA gathers data from it's memebers (auto dealers) to get the price for what used vehicles are being sold for and calculates an average for the market.

Ahh, so when the dealer told me the MSRP on the 2006 RV, she was telling me what the unit originally sold for in 2006?

That would be MY best guess. For what it's worth, NOBODY pays MSRP for a new RV and I certainly wouldn't pay NADA for a used one because NADA is BASED on the original MSRP. Good luck / Skip

Well..... yes and no.

It seems that the "new" thing in advertising is to list the MSRP of the rig and then the price being asked for it.

So in this case, here's a rig with an MSRP of $135K and is now being sold for $114K. Now that is $21K below MSRP...... doesn't it sound like a good deal?

Call the manufacturer of the vehicle and ask them what the "msrp" would be. Most likely they will tell you there is no msrp because they are in the business of making and selling new vehicles not used ones.

The NADA value on my RV was more than I paid for it new, for at least 3 years. And I didn't pay anywhere close to MSRP.

States I have spent the night in my current rig, bought three years ago.
Have RV'ed through 49 states and been in all 50, just short of my half-century.

With the number of manufacturers and dealerships going out of business I wouldn't even be interested in NADA, especially MSRP on a 2/3 year old rv. It is pretty much a buyer's market right now for any big ticket item.

Sales types are always trying new ways to separate you from as much of your money as possible. It is my job to keep that from happening.

If the sales person can't get past MSRP and NADA you might as well move on because you are going to pay more for the motor home than it is worth in today's market.

First of all, the letters MSRP stand for "Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price" and are the same as what is displayed on new automobiles, but the federal law requires dealers to display it on cars but that isn't the case with RVs.

When an RV sales person talks of MSRP on a used vehicle, they either do not know what they are talking about (not all that unusual) or they are lying(really a common thing). And in many cases both are true. Remember that many of these people learned the trade working on a used car lot.

itsalleasy - That is exactly what I thought. I was hoping to get under low retail NADA since I can't imagine they have many people walking into the store in this kind of market.

If NADA is updating based on sales of used units, how often is it updated? Do the prices on the NADA website reflect the current market conditions, or are the sales prices from six months ago?

Most believe that MSRP is Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price.

I always tell the dealer, that MSRP is for the dealers. That price was hung out as a carrot to get the dealer to sell it thinking that they were going to make 40% margin.

I go on to explain that I am not the dealer and in their negotiating with me, MSRP means something completely different. It is now used to motivate the dealer to sell, because it now means:

Might Sell Reduce Price!

Cheers
