Moderator, please leave this post in this category, as the guys using this pick-up are here. If I should also place it elsewhere, let me know.

Hey F450 owners. I have an '09 WW FTL 4005 (no comments needed, I also had an '07 FTL 4005 that failed, you can check my previous posts), currently with an '05 F350 PSD, and was preparing to pull the trigger on an F450 Lariat. However, after discussing this with my neighbor (a Supervising Ford Diesel Mechanic at a local dealership), he warned me of the horrendous mileage these trucks are getting- he claims customers complain 7-9 mpg unloaded, with the best claiming 13 mpg. Says he gets customers complaining all the time about it. What say you, the owners of toy haulers? What fuel economy are you getting? Any other complaints about the truck?
PLEASE be honest, I don't need inflated numbers to convince me to buy, I simply want to be informed- eyes wide open.

Thanks

akfiredawg

Have you looked at the specs on the F-450, especially the rear end? I have a good friend who we travel with and has an 08 F-350 CC SB and he says the best he can do is around 15-16 empty at 60 and with his 36' 5er, he gets around 10 sometimes 11 at 60mph and he does not have the 486 rear gear like the 450. I think the mechanic is close.

I don't have one but my buddy had a 2008 F-250 with the 6.4 PSD and towing his FS 30 on flat ground he was getting 7.5 mpg.
He has sold it and the fuel mileage was part of the reason.

I have a 2008 F-450 which my wife and I love. We only get 9-10 mpg around town and a whopping 10.5 - 11 mpg going down the freeway @ 60 mph. If we go 70 mph, we drop down to 8 mpg. When we tow our Cyclone 4012, we get 6 to 7 mpg. It rides great and has the
4.88 gears. It has an incredible turning radious. The only problem we have had is that it is a Redneck Magnet. I can't go camping or even pull into a parking lot without someone wanting to know about it. Lots of fun, other than the pain at the pump.

7-9 is accurate when towing... That's not far from the 10 I got with the old 7.3l psd and 3.73 gearing. However, I can tow in cruise control 98% of the time... only off on the big climbs in SoCal... which are BIG.... and slowing below 55 is a thing of the past.

The major down side is unladen mpg.... like 10-11... :| Yikes. So I just dont drive it for the h3ll of it anymore... oh well.

I get 8.5-9 towing my KZ 41KG at 17k. Empty I got 12-13 in town and 14-15 highway stock. I added a GearVendor and now can get 16-17 highway. My 08 F450 has 4.30 gears.

I get 11 to 12 while not towing.

This is not my daily driver. If you are going to use it as a daily drive I would say DONT DO IT.

I love this truck for towing my TH with a Jeep in the back. My TH weighs about 20000lbs when loaded and I get about 8.5 while towing. The power is great. I do have the 4.88 gears.

Corect me if I'm wrong, but a couple of newer F450 owners 6.4 told me that they had reflashes done at the dealer lately, that recalibrated the REGEN module for a 3 to 4 mpg gain.

Mine was just in, they said Job 2 had NO outstanding TSBs. I need to find that then.

66stag351, what is a gear vendor?

fordsooper... is a reflash available as a TSB, or is it a request by the owner of the dealer?

Ford is offering a $6500 rebate until 9/2 for an after tax price (with x-plan) at around 52k for the loaded Lariat with the 4:30's. As I understand, they are only available with the 4:30 now. This won't be a daily driver.
