I have been looking at various hand held radio's - the family type units. I see several in the 25 to 30 mile range. I know that is under ideal conditions and should expect something less, much less. I want to use it for off road ATV activities as a better chance to call back to base if trouble arises.
Anyone have any good luck with any particular brand or radio. I have seen several favorable comments about a few Midland units. Any real experience that's good out there?
Thanks.

Yes, some of the new GMRS FRS are in the 25 to 30 mile range, at least that what they advertise. Hence the question, are there really any good one's out there that some one has had real world experience with and would recommend it as a unit with an acceptable working range. By this I mean something that they are impressed with. I know the actual working range will be less, but what is it?
Thanks.

Just get your Amateur license. More radio choices and its not hard since the morse requirement was dropped. I believe 30 mile range is a dream...

We use a set from Uniden. The internet prices are very reasonable. In our part of NC the terrain and elevation differences make actual usage very erratic. Around the campground usually is not a problem.

Even with radios that advertise 30 mile range you will be lucky to get one mile.

I recently bought a set of Midland GXT950's, ran about $90.00 for the set. They advertise 30 mile range, keep in mind that would be across water or open land, no obstructions. These radios perform great, I have gotten over 5 miles range out of them, and that was not open land, they also have a built in weather radio, I highly recommend them. Has alot of features and is also waterproof. Bass Pro and Cabelas both carry them in stock. Hope this helps.

For GMRS (which requires a license, but nobody has one), I bought a base station that has removable antenna, an Audiovox unit. The antenna is on top of the trailer. The radios work fairly well from trailer to hand held (HT), however HT to HT can be spotty. The new 30MI radios do put out a full 5 watts of power, but only on the GMRS frequencies. Cobra makes units w/5 watts and have rechargable LiIon high capacity batteries. I camp in very hilly tree growing areas and get about 2 miles HT to HT.
