Just reporting something that I didn't know.
At the start of a trip yesterday I forgot to open the propane line and attempted to set the fridge on "gas setting". It started flashing after 15 seconds or so, but I didn't notice till later. My wife said the fridge was working fine for hours BEFORE I opened the line.
It must have kicked over to 12v ON IT'S OWN while we were driving.
Yes, I'm guilty of running on propane while driving on the first day to get the fridge chilled. The rig is parked on a hillside so I dare not try to chill it in advance of a trip.

The newer ones are 'smart' in that they can auto-select a power source, and (I think) know if it's not there. But I think the price for this is that they require 12V for the control board all the time when on, unlike the old 'dumb' ones that just do what you tell them, don't do any 'thinking' for themselves, and don't require any battery power unless you've selected 12V. But maybe my logic is fuzzy....
