First, let me say that this is a fantastic forum. I've obtained a lot of useful information from this site. I do have one question.

I'm embarking on a wonderful trip in a few weeks. I'm traveling from North Florida and going by way of back roads through Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas to my destination in Colorado. I will be camping my way there through National and State Parks. I'm doing this all solo! I'm a bit apprehensive to be going this distance by myself. While I'll have bear spray for Rocky Mountains camping and a whistle for hiking as well as various other noise items and a series of small camping knifes for use at the campsites, I'm wondering about whether I should carry along a fire arm. I've tried to see what the rules are in each state, and I must say - it's very confusing. I know that firearms are not allowed in most State and Federal Parks, but can you keep on in your car but locked away (and then again - if it's locked away, why would I need it???). I'd love to hear your opinion on this.
Thanks.

I would not go anywhere that I felt I needed a firearm. I know in Missouri firearms are not allowed in state parks so why carry one if you can not have it accessable. If you must have a fire arm I would suggest a pump shotgun. There is nothing like the sound of the pump action to deter a would be trouble maker.

My friend, a police lieutenant, told me the same thing.

As long As you keep it accessible and out of sight no one will ever know that you have it. If you truly need it then you have it. IMO I would rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I guess I'm just stupid and way too trusting, but we don't go camping armed to the teeth - never in 30 years on the road have we had a problem.
Woops, I forgot. Once some folks walked through our site and a I remember someone didn't pick up after their dog. Maybe I should rethink this and get protected.

a shotgun would be safe bet if you got stopped and checked or any kind of long rifle,on the other hand pistols have many rules and regulations for each state and would be easy to get in trouble in many places if they catch you with one with out a valid permit for what every state your in. most state and Federal parks do not allow any firearms, keep it out of site till you need it.

A firearm for personal protection is not only a personal choice but is a reponsibility as well.Don't carry one if you have no experience or training or the ability to use it when the need arises.Go to the NRA web page and read the information they give you.I think you need to make a conscious decision if you in fact could use a firearm for deadly force albeit man or animal?
And enjoy your trip whatever you decide.

I BRING, but dont carry, As stated, most camping facilities dont want firearms in there camp ground, it can be a scarry thing if your fellow campers snaps, and he or she on the frits. I simply like the idea of another type survival tool if there ever was a major disaster.

About twenty years ago at a McDonalds parking lot in South Carolina on I-95 I had stopped to let the dog stretch her legs and my then wife to change our one year old Daughter's diaper. I was parked in the back of the lot in the shade. While standing by the jeep holding the dog's leash we were basically ambushed by lowlife's approaching us in an auto. If I did not have a firearm within reach and loaded I am not sure we would have survived the attempted attack. Me alone with a young wife and baby, I was able to defend my family. Last thing I was considering, was I breaking a firearms law. BTW, I was not prosecuted for my actions. A lesson I will never forget.
