It's a personal decision, and no one's business, and a "don't ask, don't tell" thing! Even the cavemen carried a club, a rock or two or a spear in case an especially vicious or tasty animal came along. And as a protection against someone taking his life.

I was a cop for 30 years, and had plenty of need for a gun on occasions. As a civilian again, I still might need one to protect me, my family...or you!

Wow - some great answers and a lot to think about. Hopefully, I'll come back at the end of Sept and let ya'll know how it went. But, regardless of whether I carry or not, Plan A will be to concentrate on ways to avoid getting into a situation in the first place. Won't tell ya' what plan B is yet! Thank you all for some food for thought!

careful of these folks who will use history to underpin their advice "never needed one in 40 years..." well, 40 years ago we didn't have heroin addicts showing up on someones door step 40 miles from no where stabbing, restraining and kidnapping you and driving you to the bank machine to force you take money out (this happened 2 weeks ago in a community not far from my house in the bible belt), we didn't have nut cases on greyhound buses decapitating people... if that greyhound bus incident here in Winnipeg had of happened in the USA where folks are permitted to carry, maybe the nut case might be dead and the victim only stabbed a few times....

My American friends, these are your rights, exercise them or lose them...

oddly enough, Ive been thinking to patent a new door bell, sort of a take off of the barking dog door bell... to the sound of a mossy pump action...

I read recently a great story, maybe true, maybe just great fiction. A supposed warning sign in Montana bear country gave ideas about safety while hiking in bear country. Sign says to wear bells on clothing and backpacks and to carry pepper spray to ward off those bears who approach too close. It goes on to describe how to identify what type of bear you may be hiking near. The more docile black bear will leave droppings consisting of berries, nuts. While the grizzly bear's droppings may contains little bells and emit a aroma of pepper.

Good story Capt.
I have also heard that teddy bears leave cotton ball droppings.

Well stayed 26 yrs in the US Army and owned long barrels and never a hand Gun. Soon after I Retired and moved back to Tennessee and after several killings, and home invasions in our town. I then went and got training that was required to get a hand gun permit under the State and Federal laws. I have now been permitted for over 10 years and never leave home without the handgun. I will not go outside the lower 48 and this handgun has been in almost every State and have never had a problem. My point is I had rather be Judged by 12 than carried by 6. I can only say if you draw down be preparied to take a life. I haven't fired a Gun in anger or killed anything since 1968. I really hope I never fire this Weapon. But I will protect my family and myself. Its your choice, just try and make the best decision. Good Luck... GBY....

Far better is it to have it and not need it...than to need it and not have it.

I'm sure that within a few days there will be 100 opinions to this topic, on both sides of the issue. This has been discussed over and over on all forums but my opinion? Don't ask, and for sure don't tell and do what makes you feel safe. Where I live it's just about impossible to get a carry permit, so one has to do what one thinks is best.
