We will be going to the Northern CA coast and need to camp with our 30FT 5th wheel on Friday and Saturday night either on 101 north of Willits or near Fort Bragg CA. We love to boondock or dry camp since we are totally self contained. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ps: yes, we will be pulling the 30FT 5th wheel on CA 1. It requires careful attention but I've done it several times with no problems. I use all pullouts to let traffic by.

Jackson Demonstration State Forest has some great hiking and mountain biking -- and supposedly some good boondocking/dry camping:

Boondocking near Fort Bragg

I have never camped there, though -- we stayed at Pomo in Ft. Bragg -- one of the nicer RV parks we have ever seen.

Just north of Ft Bragg is MacKerricher State Park, south of Mendocino is Van Damme State Park, and in between Ft. Bragg and Mendocino is Russian Gulch State Park. Any of these would be excellent, but reservations are recommended.

Parking in a pullout near a highway? Is that safe in California?? Speaking as a southern Californian, I would not feel comfortable doing that -- but maybe things are different along Highway 1 in northern Calif. (I have made the same mistake before -- assuming that LA rules applied elsewhere -- in a remote area of Arizona, someone saw me lock up my generator and asked me with a smile if I was from LA.)

Not really. IMO, parking an RV or any vehicle (and this includes big rigs) in a freeway or highway pullout for any length of time and/or for anything other than a real emergency is unsafe; this choice leaves the vehicle and everyone in it in a vulnerable position. It doesn't matter if one is in southern CA or northern CA or almost anywhere else. YMMV.

Just as safe as a WalMart Parking Lot. Dont see how it's any different than boondocking down a desolate back road.

You right though maybe two cars would pass throghout the night and this would jeopardize a good nights sleep.

Pick one close to a CG.

We looked into the campgrounds on CA 20 and found nothing that would fit our 30FT 5th wheel. Also talked to one host who said we could have one site that the Rangers had "evicted someone". Not the type of campground we want.

We saw several RV's parked along the road in "laybys" that looked ok, but quite noisy with cars going by all night. CA 20 was ok with our rig, but it took careful attention to driving with all the curves and hills. Difficult if you are not comfortable driving on narrow roads with lots of sharp curves.

We are now overnighting in a private RV park for $25/night with electricity and water. Our windows overlook the river mouth entrance at Fort Bragg. Pretty good site and much more secure.

Thanks to all who replied to this message. Hope the thread helps someone else also.
