From my previous post about my Suburban SW6p it looks like I will need a new gas valve. I see that they are about $100. I also see I can get a complete new heater for about $200 including shipping. Is there any advantage to just changing out the whole unit? Also how hard is it to screw the old gas valve off the tank? Anyone done this?

We have found that, in general, it's best to replace RV components/appliances rather than just parts. Our experience with having things 'fixed' has not been good. Two examples: A refrigerator which required a new cooling unit, which cost very nearly as much as a new fridge. I'd have much rather had the whole new fridge! Also, paid to have a microwave/convection oven 'fixed' only to have it conk out down the road about 1000 miles or so and we had to replace the whole thing, anyway. After all, you don't know what might go next on your water heater.

PS: You can tell from my signature, though, that we're still keeping our old car running, even though it's been in the shop a lot this year.

For the small difference in cost, I would go with a new one.
I am surprized you found a new one for $200.00. Good price.

How hard are the units to change? I am pretty handy and have all the tools. Looks like the water lines in the rear are going to be the hardest to deal with. I have a storage door next to the heater that I can see it side of the heater and reach behind it to get the lines off.

First question . What isn't working? Solenoid or ??

There is a very Simple Repair that can be done to Most Solenoids that will save You $$ !

PM Me if You would like to give it a try!

I would replace the heater. I spent the price of a new one having one fixed, repairing it myself and then put in a new one.

No solinoid. It is a standing-pilot type.

I replaced my control valve last year ... the total cost of the valve and a professional RV repairman was less than $100.... and it took him about 20 minutes to change out the old one and install the new one..

And contrary to what some folks have been told... it DOES NOT require a "Special" tool to remove and install the valve..

The repairman used a simple adjustable wrench ....

TWO CENTS WORTH
The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved.
The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference.

wow, the cheapest valve I have found online was about $110. To get it done for less than 100 seems like a great deal. Was it the same valve I wonder. I am also thinking of just putting a Lighning Rod in it and be done with it. We usually camp with power anyhway. How fast do they heat 6 gal?
