A little something all North Carolina class A or larger RV owners should check into.
Today, 8/18/08 @ 6:30am Monday morning, a friend of mine from Thomasville NC that owns a fun mover type RV pulling a 32' enclosed trailer was pulled by a NC state trooper on I-85 & issued violation tickets amounting to over $3000.00.
Violations include, no fuel stickers displayed, no medical card on hand, no operating log book, no displayed tag on front of RV, over weight & over lenght, no trailer inspection sticker, no safety break away brake wire hooked up & was issued at that time a 10 hour out of service sticker applied to the unit.
Thats all the details I have for now from my friend & as of right now & after a call to the DOT, the NC DOT will have new laws up & posted on their website within the next week or so.
Could be an eye opener for us RV owners in the state of North Carolina & seams to be stemming from over width large boats being pulled on our highways.
Nothings final far as what I have read, but its probably comming.

What did he have in the trailer, and how heavy was he? Sounds like he was towing for hire.

Please describe the combination of vehicles more completely. Troopers are too busy to "hassle" retirees in motorhomes, speaking from personal experience.

No, not for hire, was a private coach & trailer had racing atvs inside.
Another note as well, with an enclosed trailer you can have no more than 8 gallons of stored gas inside the trailer.

Question; What is a fun mover type vehicle??? Sounds to me like it was a commercial and/or a for hire unit. Had he passed a weight station? There has to be more to be disclosed than just an RV

A fun mover type RV is a straight truck with enclosed body, bed over cab & camper at front of body & garage in the rear to haul your toys or what ever.
Some fun movers include a lift gate at the rear or some type of ramps to load & unload your toys.
Most all are diesel powered, but classed as a RV.
NC law says, any RV with a GVWR over 26,001 lbs or have air brakes, driver must hold CDLs just like a simi truck driver.

The problem with rationally evaluating the traffic stop etc is that people tend to only tell part of the story (which at times underscores their argument). If your friend wants to use a commercial truck as a motorhome there are several thing he must do to stay out of trouble. He is operating in a gray area and must resolve the situation with DOT and/or the local Trooper Post. Good luck.

Nope, NC law changed about 2 yrs ago. Started with the horse businesses getting hit with their haulers.
My friend NOT COMMERCIAL has a big rig like that, and you have to have a CDL license in the state of NC now to tow that heavy. Doesn't matter if you are a commercial enterprise of not.
RV vehicle.....yup you can get pulled.

NOT quite true. Below is a excerpt from the NC state code for CDL drivers license exemptions
Are there any exemptions to being required to have North Carolina CDL?
Yes, a few . . .
1. Active Duty Military . . . with military licenses operating military vehicles.
2. Firefighters . . . meeting approved training standards and operating authorized emergency vehicles.
3. Farmers . . . in certain cases.
4. Individuals ....operating motor homes or other vehicles used exclusively to transport personal possessions or family members, for non business purposes.
