Maybe I'm not explaining it clear enough, HE, didnt built the RV himself, it is a bought unit from a company that builds this type of RV on a truck type chassis & classed as an RV.
Just about all class A type RVs are built on some type of truck chassis be it a P30 chevy bread truck or a Freightliner.
Does that help.

A little something all North Carolina class A or larger RV owners should check into.

Today, 8/18/08 @ 6:30am Monday morning, a friend of mine from Thomasville NC that owns a fun mover type RV pulling a 32' enclosed trailer was pulled by a NC state trooper on I-85 & issued violation tickets amounting to over $3000.00.

Violations include, no fuel stickers displayed, no medical card on hand, no operating log book, no displayed tag on front of RV, over weight & over lenght, no trailer inspection sticker, no safety break away brake wire hooked up & was issued at that time a 10 hour out of service sticker applied to the unit.

Thats all the details I have for now from my friend & as of right now & after a call to the DOT, the NC DOT will have new laws up & posted on their website within the next week or so.

Could be an eye opener for us RV owners in the state of North Carolina & seams to be stemming from over width large boats being pulled on our highways.
Nothings final far as what I have read, but its probably comming.

Funny that all of these stories start with, "My friend....."

Start doing a little searching and you will find this is not new, but was started because of the Drag Race folks and their over sized haulers and trailers. Also, DOT has deemed any race event as a commercial endeavor and anyone hauling racing vehicles or materials is now required to be DOT certified. The only problem is, lots of RVers without any connection to a racing event, are going to get caught up in the sweep with their over sized RVs and trailer or toad.

It is not about what he was driving, It is about what he was hauling. Competition Equipment is considered to be for business reguardless who hauls it. What NC tags was on the vehicle?

edited for spelling

Every violation listed is for a commercial rig/driver , either he was hauling for hire or the officer thought he was. Sponsered ATV race team ?

All I know is that the Agriculture department sent out booklets to horse farms and had community meetings to educate people on this. They are starting to have us pull into the weigh stations, where we never had to before.

I was going to get mine, but decided that it wasn't worth it since my rig at that time wasn't heavy enough to bother. I am out of horses now anyhow.

Is not a "I have a friend" BS, thank you very much!

A few years ago I was pulled over in NC(had GA plates). The DOT officer didn't really know what to say when I asked what was the problem. I was in an F-250 HD pickup pulling a box trailer as I was moving myself from VA to GA. The DOT guy kept asking me if my truck was tagged correctly. I told him GA didn't issue but one type of tag for individuals with pickups. He tried to call GA DOT, but since it was Friday afternoon around 6 pm he couldn't get anyone. So he finally said he was going to let me go. I finally considered him to be hasseling folks since he really didn't know what he was looking for, especially stopping folks from out of state who were clearly making a household move. Just my experience.

As for tags, they have "weighted"

If your truck is over a certain weight, you have them whether you are a private entity or a business. No distinction of "commercial" like they used to do.

I had to deal with that every time I went thru tolls up north because they would consider them commercial when they first came out.....real PITA.

However, didn't get too hassled over it after awhile because the toll people "knew" about the NC change.

I have asked troopers from NY,VA,SC and FL on various times if they can force me to adhear to commercial rules and been told the following. If you do not have a commercial plate thay can not apply commercial rules. Now if he is over weight on any of his axels, over length and as you noted the break-away cable was not being used. There he is at fault. But the following no fuel stickers displayed, no medical card on hand, no operating log book, no displayed tag on front of RV these items do not apply to a NON commercial unit.
