DuPont’s Teflon Multi-Use Dry Wax Lubricant - find it, use it and prepare to be amazed.

I have this same slider hitch. When I first got it 3yrs ago I had the same problem. I found 2 small teeth lying in the bed of my truck. When I took it apart I discobered that the gear for the selector handle had broken several teeth jambing the roller on the left side. I ordered 2 new gears (1 as a spare) and fixed the problem. Haven't had a problem since. Thech at the Dealer told me this happens when the slider in slammed for or aft.

If you can't find the Dupont dry lube, Gunk also makes one that seems to be easier to find in stores. I've used both with equal success.

Maybe Im wrong, but I dont understand why some worry so much about possible grit being attracted to general purpose lubricants.

Hitches are constructed from 3/16" to 1/4" thick steel with rollers made from roll stock drilled for 1/2" bolts. Personally I dont feel the hitch requires such fine lubricants as graphite and other dry spray variations. I do believe they have their place, but not on Hitches. Standard lubricants like White Lithium Grease or regular oil will work just fine.

I dont 'glob' the lubricants on, but use an old toothbrush and apply to moving parts on my hitch. I can slide my hitch from out side my truck and Im not a powerhouse. I also use the same on the slide rails and gears.

It is like worrying about a piece of gravel on a train track derailing the train. Maybe Im old fashion. Just my opinion.

tvr350 - I would be interested to learn what you find when you solve the original posted problem.

One reason I like the dry lubricant on my slide rails is because I don’t want them to be greasy or oily, which is also why I use a lube plate disc on the head. The other reason, as I said above, is that DuPont Teflon Multi-Use Lubricant is specifically what the CSR I talked to at Reese recommended. The stuff works great for me.

I have a Reese 16k slider also. Mine is also hard to slide when hitched up. Slides very easy bay hand (when not hitched up). I use a marine dry-lube.

I have same hitch and same sticky problem. After throwing my lever i will first travel in the direction first. Then the other.

Example:
I will through lever in "maneuver"
Hold manual lever on trailer brake controller to lock up trailer brakes.
Back up about 6". Semi jolt.
Pull forward Very Slowly. Tapping the throttle to get her to slide slowly until it locks in.

The reverse seems to loosen up the locking pins for me.

And the whole process reversed works pretty well to set it back to travel position.

I haven't really noticed a sticky problem since. Or it is minimal not worth mentioning.

danskool,
Your routine seems pretty typical. I just use a slight uphill/downhill to hold the trailer either forward or backward when I throw the lever to the other position. Also using a slight incline or downhill the trailer wont roll when the arm is moved.
