Here's the deal. Last time I had the camper plugged in, the fridge was not cooling. (It did cool when we first bought the camper and plugged it in. But that was before we started demolition.)It had a very slight odor of Ammonia. Haven't tried it on LP. I have some other electrical issues on that side of the camper, the coils don't appear rusted out. I haven't had a chance to do some serious troubleshooting, but that is coming soon.

Anyhow, we have friends who are parting out a camper. They have a Dometic 2410 they will sell to me for $60. It is the same width but slightly shorter than our current fridge. Taking into consideration that we are redoing our camper on gum wrappers and pocket lint, (meaning very frugal, not a lot of money to put in, but willing to do the sweat equity) do you think it would be worth it to get this fridge, in case ours is indeed bad? Unfortunately our friends are moving and need to get rid of this now, so its a do it now or miss out kind of thing. I'm thinking that with the prices I've seen for new and refurb units and cooling units, or even buying a new counter height dorm fridge, it would be worth it since I think we could resell if we don't need it. What do all you wise knowledgeable folks think? Thanks!

Sounds like you put up a pretty good argument. For $60, go for it!

Ditto here, for $60 it's a steal if it was working when they pulled it.

Have you priced new RV fridges? They're sooooo expensive! $60 is a steal. I'd buy it if I were you...quick before he changes his mind!

If the old one didn't work, then you need a new or rebuilt one anyway. Price those options, then be glad, very glad you can get one for $60! Just be sure it works first.

If you smell ammonia that means the cooling unit is leaking, not cheap to fix.

Not to mention if you smell ammonia around an absorption fridge the cooling unit is leaking and has gone to fridge heaven. You don't fix it, you replace it.

The ammonia smell got me too. $60 is a good investment in your case.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of, but it was very faint and I haven't smelled it since. Seems like when I read about failures there is a strong ammonia smell.
