Just saw a few examples in a search and wanted to know what materials were used to build the racks.

I have an old 2" receiver off a dodge truck I'm considering cutting to the width of the pin box and welding it and two support arms going back on the pin box and perhaps bolting thru the adjustment holes. Does this seem feasible if I can find a competent welder to do the welding?

Before you go to a lot of work, measure the clearance between where the bikes will be and the back of the truck cab. Just because that type of rack works on one rig does not mean it will work on all.

Put a hitch on the front...I did and haven't regretted it. Do a search and you can probably find one that will just bolt on..

I made my own pin box bike rack after not having luck finding any under $500. I just purchased square pipe from a local metal shop for $17, bought the receiver tube from Farm & Fleet for $10. I cut and fabricated it myself (see the photos), tack welded it together, and then I took it to a local welding shop (as I don't have a mig welder, just gas) to do the final welding for $25. I then smooth sanded it and had it powder coated at a local shop for $25. I used 4 hardened bolts to fasten it to the pin box (cost $6). The total cost to me was about $83 - much better than $500! For just a little work, I have a bike rack that works great, looks like it came with the trailer and saved a lot of money.

Check this one out. I know, it's not a 2" receiver, but it works great!

You might want to check ouot a post I submitted a couple months ago about a front mount (pin-box mounted) bicycle rack.
http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/21038618.cfm

This link should take you there. (cut and paste into the top search bar) We had a rear bumper mount bike rack that didn't work as good as I thought, so I modified it somewhat. On our recent 2,600 mile trip to Florida, it held up nice and I even got a lot of compliments on the ingenuity. I had to edit about how to acheive link, as I don't know how to color it up for a direct link.

thanks Cox...

Janitor... good job with the powder coat. I had mine E-coated (the coating on your steering linkages) tough as nails!

Nice job on making your reciever to add to the pin box. Looks better than most of the welding on 5ers.

What is the advantage of a pin box bike rack vs one mounted to the bumper?
