never camped at either of em. hows the weather at big bear this time of the season? and how easy is it to get a reservation, if any? might have to start getting some off days during the week as the weekends (reserveamerica or not) are always booked.

Just keep refreshing reserve america. Didn't have a single reservation at the beginning of the summer and managed to spend a couple of days almost every week at one beach or another. Cancellations come up all the time. Another tip...go even if you can only get one night. They have lotteries in the morning for the next night when they get the list of no-shows/open spots. Often we were able to extend our stay.
We spent our summer at San Clemente, San Mateo (not my fave by any means) and South Carlsbad (would live at this one if we could).

I was up in Big Bear a week ago, didn't camp but drove through Holcomb Valley. Temps were great, low 80's and there were open sites in the campground but since Hanna Flats is closed Holcomb might get filled up. Thinking about heading up there in two weeks, might stay at a friends cabin, might camp, not sure.
