I have a 30 amp outlet at my house and a guest is coming to visit with a 50 amp motor home. Can he use an adapter to go down from 50 to 30 and plug it into my 30 amp outlet? He would only run one air conditioner.

Absolutely. Just make sure the 30Amp outlet is 110VAC not 220. 50-30A adapters are readily available at RV stores and most RVers carry them in their rigs. They may have to watch their electricity usage with the AC on. Thw HW heater, microwaves TBs etc in combination with the AC may trip your breaker or heat up the adapter.

Hi,

If the 30 amp receptacle is the type used by RV's then the owner of the 50 amp RV probably has the correct adapter.

If the 30 amp receptalce is something like a dryer receptacle, or was installed for something else, like a 240 volt 30 amp air conditioner, then it might not work.

If it is a 4 wire 30 amp dryer receptacle, you can adapt it to a 50 amp 120/240 volt being used by the RV, because the dryer receptacle is 120/240 with a netural, ground and two hot wires, just like the 50 amp stove or RV type receptacle used by larger RV's. The adapters are not sold over the counter, but all the parts are at Home Depot. You would buy a 4' long dryer power cord and a surface mount 50 amp receptacle, and then put everything together correctly.

It must be done correctly! The people at Home Depot might be able to show you what goes where, or send me a PM.

Fred.

Absouletly, just be sure it is a 120 volt recptacle. If it is a RV recptacle he probably has a adapter already.

Also, if he has a good EMS (Energy Management System) in the rig, he can run smoothly off your 30amp service without worry of overloading your circuit...even run both air conditioners if needed.

My MH is parked in the driveway right now, hooked up to a 30A 120V outlet. The kids are in town visiting for our son's wedding, and of course, the weather has been 100 degrees. One AC has been doing an adequate job of keeping the coach livable, although the kids have not been using much else besides the AC and the TV. After they leave, I am going to install a 50A outlet for future reference. Anyone know where I can get a 50A extension cord cheap?
