Last Saturday, leaving one of those small RV parks with only electricity and dried grass (we only needed a place to sleep), we experienced a tight turn getting out of the park. Watching my mirrors closely, there were ten foot tall blackberry vines racking the passenger side of our fifth wheel and all looked well until we arrived home. I started to let down the landing gear and noticed that the right side footpad was missing. Lesson learned....Cotter pins must be installed with the open portion facing the rear of your rig. What must be the odds of a cotter pin that size being caught and pulled off the foot?

Blackberry vines can do just about anything, except die! I've seen them jam chainsaws.

Almost lost one of my feet because the cotter key came out, the only thing holding it on was the cotter pin itself and half of it had backed out. I was never sure how it came out...maybe it was a blackberry vine. I fixed it on the road with a galvanized nail (bent over) instead of the cotter key. That galvanized nail is still holding it on.

Yes that happened to me after leaving Myrtle Beach a couple years ago. After posting the question on the form and looking at all the replies. I figure that after raising the landing gear and manually push the bottom of the landing gear up in place the cotter key hit the outside part of the landing gear and was pushed out. Hence while going down the road I lost the foot. Replaced with the ones that have the wire that goes from one side to the other and locks.
