Ok, I know that this has probably been hashed over a thousand times so one more wont hurt.
I have a onan microquiet 4000 with maybe 200 hrs on it. It will run fine for hrs with no load. When I turn on the AC it shuts off after 3-5 minutes. It will start back up with no problem without the load on it and will do the same thing. I try to run it at least once a month for an hour or so but it wont run continously with a load.
Any suggestions!

Check the oil. Generators have a safety device which will prevent them from operating in a low oil condition. The load may make enough oil leave the pan/sump to trigger this safety feature. It is worth a look.

I would check your altitude adjustment setting. If you are set too high, the generator may be running too lean on the air-fuel mix, which will cause the engine to kill when a load is added. Lowering the setting slightly will allow a richer setting and give the engine more power to handle the heavier load when applied.

If nothing else works,,check the resistance to the field,,under 24 ohms would indicate a open in the rotor,,
If the rotor is open ,but still able to generate field flash to run unloaded,,,,putting a load on it will cause the generator to lose field flash
You can access the wiring at the voltage regulator ,and check wire f1 and f2 for resistance
Generally 24 ohms is spec, but can be affected by brush wear ,or comm ring scoring. If the resistance if out of spec, you will have to remove the stator to check the rotor anyway,or get to the brushes
hope this helps

I think oldcarguy meant "over 24 ohms" would indicate an open. He has a good suggestion and I would take it one step further in suggesting that the connections to the capacitor may be corroded and need cleaned on the voltage controller if it is the original (likely since your unit only has 200 hrs). That controller on my Microquiet 4000 is mounted next to the starter solenoid on the left. Please disregard this suggestion though if you have the newer model that has eliminated this connection.
