we are new or soon to be new to RVing. We have rented a 33 foot Fleetwood Flair and found the size okay for the two of us. We are looking to buy a used rv Class A motorhome. We think 33 - 34 ft would be adequate for our needs. We are thinking diesel because our trips would be long, 800 to 1000 mile range for family visits. Plus, we plan to retire in a year or two and plan to travel the Southwest/West from PA just to see the country at a leisure pace.

Any suggestions on type of motorhome and model would be appreciated. We have looked at a 2003 Winnebago Journey DL w/45,000 miles with an asking price of mid $80,000. This is alot of miles, we have looked at it once and there is some wear and tear on the furniture. Is this a reasonable price for the high mileage and wear and tear? What are the things we need to check out?

Any and all suggestions, comments, recommendations, etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks, Ron & Nancy

Ron and Nancy, While we are on our third motorhome I can't say much about used pricing. We purchased new each time. However, our current mh is diesel and there is a major difference over gas. The last mh was a 36' gas. The diesel is heavier and ,for us, provides a much improved ride. The performance has been quite different from the gas mh. If you can drive both--gas and diesel. The rest depends on affordability, condition, layout, features, etc.

Better look around some more, it's a buyers market out there, right now. Here's one in my neighborhood, which may have sold quick for all I know. I've used this example in more than one forum to make a point....like, LOOK...fuel for life is now free!...meaning that the downturn in the ecomomy and fuel costs, especially for diesel, has produced some giveaway prices, so in essence fuel is now cheaper than if it was 1 or 2 dollars a gallon, cuz 50 and 60K savings buys a lot of fuel....just wait when this is over and there's a shortage out there of coachs. Sorta reminds me of the real estate market down here. I mean if they were selling like crazy at a premium before, and considered a good deal, then why isn't half that amount...a good deal now....geeezzzhhh
Anyway, here ya go....

45,000 miles on a diesel engine is barely broken in. The average diesel engine will outlast any gas engine by 5x or more. That's part of the reason they're more expensive. You will find pro's & con's on both. Do some research on line there are alot of units for sale right now look at lots of them. The furniture can be fixed or replaced. The soundness of the unit, how well the "business" end has been maintained, age of the tires, etc, are all more important. When you have questions, bring them here to the forum. Guaranteed someone can help.

I know things are down, but that doesn't make sense. No way will I take that for my 04 Dutch star 3810 with 43,000 miles and no tow dolly. Must be wrecked??? BTW, milage doesn't hurt the diesel, and probably not the chassis, but the box begins to fade when the miles accumulate. Also, dealers will try to sell, by asking you to ignore miles. However, when you are trying to sell it back, they will knock off tens of thousands for high miles.

OP, that sounds high to me. But I've never purchased a used MH except for the first one in 1988 and it was a factory demo unit with special equip.

I thought this one looked decent, depending on the reserve price. The description is messed up, but apparently it really is the diesel as shown, NOT the gasser as described.

There are 24 hours in every day - it all depends on how you choose to use them.

We found an 07 yesterday that we REALLY want. I have an 2000 Dutch Star Diesel Pusher with 2 slides. Great interior nice lay out all leather. If you think 45k is high miles, this one has 89k but that motor and tranny is awesome (300 Cat). Ive talked to guys with these things in thier dump trucks with 750,000 miles and run like new. Bottom line is the coach will wear out long before the motor will even be tired. Im probably gonna have to "fire sale" it because of the market.
