I was told by a sales rep at Sprint that outside the EVDO area the aircard would run slower than dialup. I was sure that I was told by another rep somewhere that the aircard would run fast but EVDO was real fast.

According to Telus (which should be the same as Sprint), 1X would average around 60kbps Dialup is 28.8kbps to 56kbps depending on where you live (I only ever got about 24kbps.) EVDO Rev 0 is much faster and Rev A is even faster. Most all of Sprint EVDO is Rev A. When roaming on Verizon you will be limited to 1X, while roaming on Alltel you can roam at EVDO. Your actual speed can vary quite a bit due to signal strength, channel congestion, back-haul capacity, etc.

I am using a Verizon aircard and I am not restricted to 1X. Speed depends on whether I am in a National Access Area or Broadband Area. Either one is a lot faster than my dial-up at home.

Like the poster above, I'm also unsure what you mean here.
I have the Verizon aircard and a Verizon cell phone, and on our way up to Fairbanks I had EV speed all across the US and all the way up to Fort Nelson, BC.
Leaving Fort Nelson I lost EV. But then I lost cell coverage too.
I didn't get anything back until we entered Alaska. Although I only have 1X in Fairbanks, when we were in Anchorage a few weeks ago I had EV speed.

Just a heads up...
I've had unlimited cellular internet for 5 years. I used to pay $80 a month for slow speeds but the flexibility was still worth it (to me).
Now, both Verizon and Sprint have instituted 5 Gig caps. So all of this speed doesn't do someone much good unless they can really enjoy it for downloads, video, etc.
After all, who cares if the emails scream into your inbox at the speed of light? 
I'm teasin' a little.. but before you sign any contracts, be sure you can live with 5 Gig a month caps. I can't.
I'm going to probably go to a Portland company called Millenicom next month because I don't have much to lose at this point now that Sprint has changed their contracts with current users like me.
Just a heads up. (I'm kinda sore about this change, so I thought I'd post!)

It seems these companies just change the policies whenever they want. When I signed up for the Verizon aircard, I was told it was unlimited usage, I could use Vonage VOIP, and I could forward my cell phone to the VOIP line when needed. Turns out the there is a bandwidth limitation and, using the aircard for any streaming violates TOS, and Verizon intentionally blocks forwarding a cell line to VOIP.
Realistically, I've not come close to 5 gigs in a month, but the overage charges are usury and punitive which is why I am willing to pay a bit extra for "unlimited" use.
My cell phone contracts expire in a month or so. I can hardly wait to make a change!!

I left Verizon at the end of my contract because of their TOS limitation on streaming video. Technically (as I remember it) just watching a 1 minute YouTube video would be a no-no with Verizon.
So I went to Sprint. Unlimited. But now, in a really sneaky way, they have changed the Terms and Conditions to allow them to cancel you for going over 5 gig... or (I forgot to mention!) 300 MB of roaming in a month. 300MB isn't much if you were an RVer that was roaming. (and I'm not sure where one would have to go to fall out of the network)
Anyway... this is the pits.
I'm looking into Millenicom.

sally, for the record, you would have been in violation of verizon's terms of service, at that time... but that restriction is no longer in place.
verizon no longer cares what people do with their service. all contracts established after march 2008, are free to use any internet service they want, as much as they want.
there are no limits on data usage. it is unlimited.
there are however, overage charges that come into play beyond the first 5GB of data use per billing month.
in essence, verizon users can eat all they want, because they will be paying for it.
i make this clarification because you are giving people impression that verizon has restrictions that no longer exist.
