long story short, SOMEone in my small family of 2 (not me) lost her drivers license...

If you were too far out of the way (and heading farther) how would you go about getting a copy of it?

I know the DMV site says you have to be there to present your id and SSN card and pay the req fee ($10), but its inconvenient, hoping someone knows a trick.

I'd contact the DMV in your home state and ask them how to handle it. They may have a way for you to go to an out of state DMV or police dept, etc to verify your identity and then be willing to send the duplicate to your home address.

I know of a guy that can get you a license. He can also get you a social security card, credit cards, and passports. If you can wait three years he'll be out on parole.

trkrhelp has the answer.
FYI
I have a small fire safe bolted to the floor in a closet in the camper. In the safe, among other things, are photo copies of everything in our wallets. Drivers license, credit cards, insurance cards, etc. That way, if either of us loses our wallets we have copies of everything until we can get the originals replaced.

If you are a resident of Colorado and are out of state, you can get a duplicate by mail if you have an out of state mailing address to send it to. See DMV link below.

I don't know about other states but in Wa it's not a big deal to get caught without your lic. as long as you actually have a valid one. In fact it's not even a moving violation and when I got a citation for this a few years ago, it was only a $30 ticket. So I wouldn't sweat not having it too much.

It probably depends on the state your license is from, in CA we were on the road last year, when I was supposed to take a driving test. We called the DMV, the operator transferred us to the person who handled it. They mailed an extention for my license to our PO box, and we had it re-mailed to us in VT. Instructions with it said to attache it to my license.

It worked, was stopped in OH the first time in decades by an officer. He got on the computer, and verified it, no problem. This year we were in WA when our smog test was due. Again we called the DMV, got an extension, they said, "Just get the test within 30 days after entering CA.

Most states have probably had to deal with such problems for a long time, so have methods in place to deal with them. We feel it is best to call, instead of emailing to get info, even when we have to hold sometimes.

CO DMV

It can't be that simple. If it is, where were you when my license got stolen last year when a hooligan piled into me in the aisles at the local home depot?

The CO DMV would only reissue the replacement drivers license to me IF I showed up in person and had valid photo ID. Curiously a valid photo ID is defined as a current CO drivers license. Think that one through for a minute. They do not accept a SS card or birth certificate or a federally issued pilot license or anything else the typical person is likely to have available. It took MONTHS of playing 20 questions to get the license reissued. They finally caved and printed a copy out for me most likely due to the fact they got tired of seeing me in the place every week. I think they mumbled something along the lines of "he's been in here every week for months with the same exact story and glib answers with every document imaginable so he's bound to be legitimate...besides we're tired of seeing him every few days..." as I walked out the door with the license.

Storal of the Mory: Get a second copy of your DL if possible. Get a passport if you don't have one already. Never ever lose your DL.

Sheesh.

Southwind85 - just out of curiousity, did you try filling out the form and sending it in?
