My 2001 1500 HD Silverado frame is rusting. We park it on a gravel driveway. The frame wax is dissapearing and the rust is growing. I live in road salted Indiana. I actually don't even drive it much the last few years. It does camper duty only. What I am getting around to is I've read here, somewhere, that the Canadians do a special winter prep, some sort of under-body treatment to protect there vehicles. I never heard of people around here doing this. I plan on getting a few more good years out of the old mule.
Do they spray oil or rewax, or exactly what is it?

On my rigs when the waxy coating disappears, I use the high pressure rinse at the car wash to clean the dirt off. Then I use standard Rust-Oleum "Hard Hat" black to cover the frame.

Rust-Oleum "Hard Hat" is only available as an industrial spray paint, and can usually be found at places that supply to industry. I haven't been able to locate it at Wal-Mart.

Yep lots of salt used up this way
I recall using Zibart on both my 75 van and maverick, wasn't worth a pinch, they both rusted under the Zibart.
We bought our RV in 05, have it Rust checked every year. The little rust that was underneath is long gone. Bought an 05 Pontiac last Dec and sprayed it with Rust check myself.
Prior to that I had an 84 Buick which I sold this spring (it was getting a bit ripe) and I sprayed that with used crankcase oil. (illegal to do that now)
Anyway here's the site about Rust Check if you are interested

By a rattle can of black asphalt undercoating (like a thick black spray paint) and spray it on yourself. It lasts and you can paint it right over rust.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I did go to the Rust Check website and found a local Rust Check. I'm going to call them and get a quote. I really want it done right and if they have some warranty, even better. I was actually kind of surprised how big Rust Check is. They have them all over. I don't remember them advertising much. Thanks Willey. Zig

zig

why don't you treat the rust instead of covering it up. go to the paint prep section in Lowes or another one of those stores and get the lime green stuff for rusty/bare metal primner - it's main ingredient is phoshoric acid.

Put it in a garden spray bottle and apply it to the rust. wear hand and eye protection.

Mybe do a google on the subject and read about the reaction. It converts iron oxide into an inert substance - maybe iron phosphate, I donno for sure and don't care

Yep, Ziebart isn't worth the time it takes to listen to one of their commercials...

Another product not mentioned here is POR-15. POR means Paint Over Rust. It's expensive, though.

I have also heard great things about POR-15. Although I would never spray anything over rust, without eliminating the rust first.

Rust Check doesn't cover anything up. Basically it drives out the moisture and leaves a very light protective film. You can still see all the metal and if you have a rust spot you can see what happens there. When we got the MH, there was road asphalt stuck to the frame in places and it wouldn't come off. Its now falling off and there's no rust underneath. From a place where the salt trucks are out at the first sign of ice or snow, having a rust free vehicle is nothing short of a miracle. It cost me $145.00 to have the RV (24ft) done, a car goes for about $115.00. I spent $120 doing the car myself, so this year I'll let the professionals do it. It all depends on how much of the stuff they spray on. Have the door panels done also, they drill little holes I guess some people don't like that.

Cheers Willey
