We are AZ residents. Sold house and moving into our fiver full time and will be remaining in AZ for next 4-6 months. My question is: Is it possible to est. SD residency officially from long distance using one of the organizations that specialize in this process. If so, we'd appreciate thoughts on how to do it etc. Or, must one actually physically be there to do all that this entails? Thanks

Use Alternative Resources in Sioux Falls, SD. You can register vehicles, get SD insurance, wills, etc. from distance. You have to get drivers license register to vote in person.

We were traveling through VA when we 'moved' from TX to SD. Called Alt. Res. and gave them my CC# over the phone for the annual rental of my new "house" (PMB). They faxed a form to us for signature. We signed and faxed it back and it was over - we were SD residents; total elapsed time of @15 minutes. I thanked the moving company and sent them packing We then handled reregistration of the TV and 5ver by mail to Alt Res. and they took care of it with the DMV & sent us the new plates. Called the ins. company, told them we moved and gave them our new address. I think it was 4-5 months later that we finally got to SD and got our new driver's licenses.

Avan, you have been very helpful to us over the years...doubt that you remember all the posts. :-)) Can you expand a bit on your post if it's not too much trouble? The company you mentioned is one that we've pretty much chosen to use. More details please. Thanks a lot. Hope we meet up on the road!

Same as Avan. We were in So Cal when we "moved" 5 years ago. We did it all by phone. 3 months later we were in SD to get our DLs and reg to vote. It was simple.
Alternative Resources is the firm we use and can't say enough about them. We try to stop by our mailbox once a year. It is also a time to visit the bank, lawyer, etc

One point here. Having a mail forwarding service does not make you a resident! It is just that, a forwarding service. What makes you somewhat of a resident is the establishment of voting rights, drivers license, bank accounts, vehicle registration, etc.
Alternative Resources is a great place to start. We have been with them since '03.

I'd expand on it if I could but I don't know what to expand. It was that easy. Alt Res. led us through it by phone and we just did what they told us to do, signed where they told us to sign and faxed to where they told us to fax. I got through it cause Alt Res made it idiot proof

Doing it all by phone or mail or internet is all well and good, and SD or wherever may well consider you a resident, but the key issue is not the new state, but if the state where you are giving up residency will still want to consider you a resident for purposes of trying to collect income tax or other taxes when you don't file. In the case of the OP, I would suspect that AZ would still want their taxes and may choose to dispute the assertion that this long distance transaction truly did change the place where the OP resided. Especially since the OP continued to live in AZ. But then again resolution of disputes like that is what courts are for. If it was me, I would spend thirty days or so in the state and make it demonstrably clear that I moved to SD and wasn't just trying a state income tax avoidance mechanism. Even after the thirty days I wouldn't race back to AZ.

As wandering Mike said it is not only the state that you want to become residents of it is the state that you are leaving that you need to worry about with regard to taxes, et al. I know that California is very aggressive in this regard and when we left (although we're still trying to sell the stick & brick) we bought some land, changed our reg's, changed our insurance, etc as well as stayed out of CA for over 30 days. Even now when we have to go back to visit we don't stay in CA for more than a few weeks at a time.
