If you are driving home down the Cassiar Highway in late july through August, Hyder is an easy side trip. Even though the salmon run was late and small, we did see bears there this year, but more in the past. Here is a link to our 2006 video of Monika the momma bear with her triplets and a wolf also fishing for salmon!Hyder bears and wolf 2006

Those triplets are on their own this year. One came down to the creek each of the four days that we were there in August. He was never successful at catching a fish when we were there, however. It did not stop him from trying though.

We saw them too! The two males and female were hanging around for the three days we visited towards the end of July....cute! The bigger male got into all kinds of mischief. We also saw Monika the sow. The pro photographers there know them all as they come back to Hyder every year and showed us who was who.

If you want to see bears just do all the things on the "don't do list".
1. Bath in salmon oil, bacon grease and blue berry juice.
2. Make a coat out of salmon skin
3. Leave your trash outside with a liberal coating of bird seed and dry dog food.
WARNING these action can result in a massive fine and or body/property damage.

My sister is visiting from Wasilla said to go to McNeal or better yet Ketchican she said that Ketcican has a very large bear population and they are so plentiful they are like dogs. She also says anywhere you
go in Alaska is beautiful and you will have the time of your life.

We saw black bears in Ketchikan this year. The bears were starting to come down to Herring Cove to get salmon when we were there in mid-June. I believe the salmon run there was a bit late as it was in much of Alaska this year. The number of bears showing up each evening was just starting to pick up as we had to leave. This was the area we met the locals looking to see the bears.

Yeah, just park at the Fort Richardson campground in Anchorage, or hang out near Campbell Creek in the south end of town once the reds start spawning. This year was "The Summer Of Bears" in Anchorage.
