I bought a set of "slide out stabilizers" several years ago when I thought I absolutely neeeded them to help support the dining/living room slide on my first 5th wheel.
I used them once or twice for that purpose.....until I saw a 5th wheel that had settled the front landing gear into soft ground and put excessive weight on the slide out supports....which torqued the slide out mechanism so badly it wouldn't retract.
I never used them again for their intended purpose but when I got my toyhauler and was thinking of a way to support the tailgate...as you are....I remembered them and gave them a try.
They are perfect for their new use.....strong, fully adjustable, and even have a "U" channel top that fits the rubber bumpers on the tailgate.
They are item # 11253 in the Camper World online catalog but are probably available other places.

In the process of using 3 legs that are adjustable from Ikea. Going to mount them tomorrow. You can screw them on and off. Weather permitting it will be done tomorrow. I did not want to use cables either and this might be the fix. Will see. Alan

I took a look and I have at least three places to attach to the top of the door frame, but can't really see a way to attach to the ramp door itself. What kind of eye bolts do you use to attach to the ramp door? Are they self tapping or bolt through? Any ideas? Dont really want to go all the way through, and need it to be strong enough to support the 1500lbs the door can handle. Might be able to screw some 1/8" plates to the side of the ramp and still have it close. I think 1/4" would be to much.
Thanks,
Mav

I've used cables and they have been perfect for years now. Once you have them the correct length you don't have to adjust them assuming you level your trailer when you setup. The problem that I see with legs is that the ground under the patio is not always firm or level. It's not unusual for us to have 3-4 people on the patio at one time. I have to say it's one of the best mods we have done and works great with an Add-A-Wall from Carefree of Colorado.
Here are a few photos.

PETA is gonna get you for making your dog hold up your ramp like that.

Cables seem like the way to go, just got to figure out how to mount a hook-up on the door itself......
