Are there full timers using Vermont as a home base?
If so what do you find as the up side?
- Friends
- Family
- Own property
The down side's I see are;
- 6% sales tax
- State Income Tax
- Annual vehicle inspections
Thanks,
Larry

Larry, Here's something you can consider: "Home state" has little to do with where you go and how long you stay there. Our home state is SD for all the reasons I'm sure you are already aware. We have friends and family in VA, NY & OH. Since we are full timers, we visit them whenever we like as stay for as long as we want.
We don't have to go back to our home state for any reason for 6 years. That's because our drivers licenses can only be renewed in person and must be done every 6 years. All other transactions are handled by our mail forwarding agent, MY HOME ADDRESS, Inc. We vote by absentee ballot and since there is no motor vehicle inspection, we don't have to trot back there every year to get the MH and car inspected.
I hope this gives you another perspective. Of course, what works for me may not work for someone else. No matter what, have a good time when you hit the road full time. We enjoy it, hope you do, too.

Fulltimers since April '06 with 3 fur kids (George - mini Aussie, Archie - mini Poodle, Kitty - 20 yo blind cat)
1991 Beaver Contessa towing 2006 Subaru (4 down)
Started workamping Sept '07 - This isn't too bad. Think we'll do it some more.

NY will allow you to get your vehicles inspected in what ever state your in if your not in your home state at inspection time doesn't have to be done in NY if you have NY plates maybe Vermont will too, you would have to check.if you don't get a inspection you could get a ticket if caught.

I'll echo everything Tom said - except we use America's Mailbox in Rapid City as our mailing agent. One more SD benefit we've found is the ability to easily defer or be excused from jury duty. They fully understand "full timer" at the court house, and have been very gracious about accommodating our constant travels. Now if we'd just get a call in the summer when the weather is acceptable.

Gosh we have friends that live in Vermont and are gone from there all winter but all they do is moan and groan about the taxes on everything which are quite large.
Why not pick a state that is "your" money friendly instead?

Refer to Original Post.
I am aware of the taxes, inspection requirements, ...
I would like to hear from FT's that are using VT as a home base. I don't want to bash anyone for their choice!

There must be a few, but I have never run across one. I would think that as long as you have some way to maintain an address there, no reason why you can't do so. To be sure, check the Vermont laws with regard to domicile.

A couple of years ago we ran across a Vermonter full timing and using VT as their home base. At that time we hadn't thought much about FTing.
There is one here at Moose River Campground. We talked and he said that he's happy. Yep 6% sales tax and State Income tax but he didn't think it was a big issue.
I have a note off to DMV to see what the requirements are if you are not in Vermont when the vehicle inspection is due.

The reasons you've listed above are exactly why you won't find many fulltimers using Vermont as a homebase. Most fulltimers are looking for states with no sales tax, no income tax or inspections that require us to return to an area on a regular basis.
If friends and family, etc., are your major concern...go for it!

Vermont DMV has the following to say regarding inspection if I am out of state when it is due.
"You can ask the current state you are in if they can do a courtesy inspection for you. If they do not then you will need to inspect the car immediately when you return to VT."
So the fact that VT has an annual inspection requirement does not mean that you have to return yearly to have the inspection done.
