Gang,
Good Morning! I am in current pursuit of purchasing a 09 Outback Sydney 310BHS. I am trading a mint 06 Laredo 284BHS. This is where I need help. I have about 3 dealers that I am working with. The price of new one seems to be all over the place. Just last night Camping World quoted me $32750 out the door. Well with an MSRP of $35528 I feel this is too much. Is the rule of thumb still 30% off MSRP? Ok now the other side of things my trade in. I have a range of $12000 to $15000 for my trade. I have very little patience for the sales game of back and forth negotiation. However I was shocked by Camping World's price last night and they would not budge on price. My payoff on mine is $15707 is it unrealistic to expect a dealer to give me at least that for my trade in? I would figure with today's economic status a dealer would love to move a TT and I am aware that trade in's are not bringing much money but I still feel I can make this work to fit my budget.

Thoughts and or Opinions?

Well, "I" would see about selling the Laredo to someone else and not trade it. I have always done this with my trucks, and for me it worked well. Perhaps you will find a buyer in need of a new trailer to live in, after the hurricane damage is all over with. But I am not a banker or something, so take all this as just opinion.

First, keep the price of the new unit separate from the trade in. Negotiate the price of the new unit without even mentioning the tradein. After you get that price, then negotiate the value of the trade in. That will then give you which dealer has clear price advantage. Also, ascertain from each dealer all their add on charges, such as closing costs, will effect the final price. Also, since you are financing, shop finance charges from several sources as well.

I think you will find that even the MSRP will vary between dealers, so a solid discount percentage figure may be difficult to zero in.

We paid $24,000 for our Outback Sydney 31rqs. I had them quote me without the trade in. Knowing that they inflate your trade in value to keep the price near the MSRP. We didn't owe on the TT so that made it easier. We did have a trade in..that they gave us Trade in value.

DH called 3 dealers after we got a price ( from some dealer in Michigan) can't remember the name but they sell at really good prices. For us it was not worth the gas and time to go there. Plus some dealers tend not to like to do warranty work if you didn't buy from them. I ran into that problem with a dealer on our Jayco.

So we bought from the dealer with the best price.

BTW we love our Outback

This is good advise if you are going to trade.

Go to another Dealer. Do NOT tell him you have a trade.

Find out the bottom deal on the new coach. Never tell a dealer you have a trade IF you want to find out the bottom deal on the new coach.

Have more info, but got to go to Church, be back latter.

they are doing what ever they need to do to stay in business and make a profit... they are not concerned with your past financing arrangements and it is unrealistic to expect more for a trade just because you still owe more on it...

that doesn't mean they are offering you a good deal, only you can decide if it's a good deal for you and you can make it fit your budget...

the 30% rule of thumb is for the purchase of a new RV and wouldn't include a trade... if you want a heavily discounted price for the new one expect a heavily discounted price for your trade also... the tight economy hasn't lowered their cost of doing business and gives them less incentive than you might think to move a new RV at a loss...

My thoughts are why are you trading RVs if yours is in mint condition? I guess it is the way we are, but DW and I keep our vehicle and campers for ages to get our monies worth out of them.

Thanks for all the reply's thus far. These are the numbers I need to reach to make this work.

At least 25% off MSRP which would bring price to $26646
Get $15K for my trade in
Payment at $450 for 7 years
Sign on the dotted line

I found the same model on-line with a sale price of $25995 so I know this is with in reason. Maybe it is my trade that is killing me.

JMHO but i would not expect to see a huge savings off MSRP but yet get full pay off for your trade in. Do you know the NADA trade in value on your 06? I have never found a dealer that will give huge discounts off MSRP and offer top dollar for a trade. Hope you have better luck.
