This post is partly a test. Recently, every single post I make on this particular forum has been getting blasted into oblivion by the moderator. This is because I am often highly critical of the substandard (and probably, illegal) wages/compensation that workampers receive. There is obviously an industry connection here.
Assuming that this post survives (unlikely), please feel free to reply to this post, re the following question: if you have workamped, what was the total value of the compensation you received (retail value of noncash compensation + wages), and for how many hours of work?
***I realize that this is already the subject of an existing thread, but I want to know just what you're getting paid, and for how many hours of work--nothing else (the thread I mention is a bit rambling). But please, if you receive noncash compensation (like a FHU site), calculate the full retail value of that in your answer.

What is the point of asking people for private financial info on a public forum? Maybe that is the issue a moderator would have as well.

I have never work camped. I would like to try it. Going in I would say. I don't have to work for it if I don't want too. I only want to do it because I like to be busy and I can't just sit around the camper all the time. I don't do it here at home so I know I couldn't do it on the road. Perhaps, for this reason I would not be much into negotiating some kind of fair wage. I hope this doesn't have a negative effect for those that do have to work while camping. I just want to try it and see how it works for me...........Thank you....John

Compensation for work camping is like any other job. Let's take a place like Home Depot. You have people there making $7 per hour and it goes up from there like to $20 an hour with variables in compensation. So some places only give free camping for helping 12-24 hours a week. Some give free camping plus a wage. Some throw in free propane, free laundry, store discounts, etc. I've had a few positions where I've received a wage for all hours worked, free camping, free laundry, free propane, discounts in store and then a completion bonus. The bonus has varied from .25, .50 and $1. per hour for every hour worked. Putting a dollar value on each and every perk is almost impossible. Let's say you get free laundry. Someone who has a washer & dryer in their camper will hardly use this perk while other will. A position in a National Park usually only gives a free campsite but the free things you can do like in Yellowstone is impossible to attach a dollar value. So compensation is an individual thing. You can't say if I work camp I will always get $8 an hour for all hours worked, get free camping with free laundry, propane and a bonus.

from what I can tell about workamping.....you would be camping anyway, now it will cost less for work exchanged.......
if it was profitable, there would be a 3 to 5 year waiting list.
being able to do what you with a no or low cost solution is called a bargain
exchange your time (retired = surplus time) for required tasks (low demand) it may be worth LESS than minimum wage, but, Congress has set the limbo bar low at $5.15

Nothing is forcing anyone to workamp- most do it for the experience and to deflect some costs associated with the experience. What you are missing is workamping is not a career, it is a choice and lifestyle. I volunteer at National Parks, only get a free campsite in return for my work. I get to live in a special place, meet people from all over the world, and provide a needed service.
You have missed the whole point! What about the people who do volunteer work at a hospital? What do they get? What about people who volunteer at community organization?
Lets compare someone who works for tips with a workamper. They work for less than minimum wage and hope they get compensation (money) from the people they serve. A workamper usually works for minimal wages, if any at all, and receives compenastion (free campsite, and other amenities) from the people (campground owner) they serve.

Very well said Wayne.
See my post in this forum this morning - First time Experience.
Parks and campgrounds need only people who care about the place, the people they work for, the service they provide and most important, to care about those they are serving. No, it's not just money.

Everyone has said it well. We have workcamped and volunteered for 8 years. It will never support us but we enjoy it and it helps the bottom line.
It is a way of life and if you can't get your thoughts around that, you will not be happy either volunteering or workcamping.
BTW...I am letting your thread run...so far.... ...despite the title.....

Well, obviously, no one will supply said information unless they want to. The "point" is to gather that information. I'm not coercing anyone in any way to give that information. If someone does supply that, it will part of a VOLUNTARY exchange. Ya get my drift?
