It is a way of life and if you can't get your thoughts around that, you will not be happy either volunteering or workcamping.
BTW...I am letting your thread run...so far.... ...despite the title.....
Wow. Just...wow. Do the MAJORITY of people here think that their time is worth less than minimum wage/hr? Apparently so!
If I work for a wage, (cash or noncash compensation), I want to be paid fairly. Getting paid three bucks/hr (or the equivalent) to muck out restrooms, answer phones, register campers, pick up trash, whatever, isn't a "lifestyle"--it's being ripped off. I guess that RV park owners have latched on to this, though, and who can blame them--why pay decent wages when there are LOTS (apparently) of people willing to work for subminimum?
If you have the luxury of not needing to earn a living wage, that's fine, but you cheapen yourself when you sell your time and labor for nothing. You also destroy the labor market for those who would LIKE to workamp but can't afford to live on $3/hr. A person's expenses aren't limited to space rent, propane, and electricty--there are other costs of living--insurance, clothing, food, etc. etc.
Volunteering, or selling yourself cheaply as an altruistic exercise, are different things altogether, of course. I refer only to the common situation where Slab City RV Park and Fox Farm offers x dollars for x hours, in a strictly business transaction.
At any rate, I think I've flushed out the reason why you see all these Workamper ads for jobs that pay nothing---people are lining up eagerly to apply for these jobs!! Amazing...but I guess it's the same dynamic that sees people forking over $40/night for a 10x30 concrete slab, a water spigot, and an electrical outlet. There seems to be NO sense of the value of money out there in the RV crowd (with some rare exceptions).

Uh...no...since it's rather hard to believe that you are being paid $600/day for ANYTHING that gets done in an RV park.
It's possible that you misplaced the decimal point.

You think what you want and those of us who choose to live our way of life will, as well.
Obviously you will never get it, so I will say no more as a poster. Only as a moderator....

Dianne -
Would you please do us all a favor and either suggest Mr. Beaverdance find another forum or simply close this thread?
It's sorta marred a perfectly good day.
Gotta run - Have on my KOA shirt ready to perform some horrible jobs! (on a holiday no less!)

Per day.....
Golf $20.
Swimming 10.50
River trips 500.
Wages 70.
Dinners at least once a week 10 plus
Of course I can't do it all at the same time, even so...those river trips are worth the whole summer!

Before this closes I wanted to say that you are arguing about apples and oranges. The value of the workkamping experience is what you will get/place on it. If I could get a year round position that would reguire us to register campers after hours and on the weekend end we would stay there forever. I would consider the full hook up site with cable and WiFi to be plenty of compensation but anything else would be add on luxuries. Other work would require more compensation in a mutually agreed upon decision. That being said it holds true for everyone who wants to workkamp and IS DIFFERENT for each person. A full hook up site in the great outdoors is enough for me and I understand it may not be for you so don't take the job.

Maybe not, but sure seems to be a lot of happy folks doing what they want and to me that's more important. Being happy and enjoying what you do and want. You can't buy my happiness and enjoyment no matter what you pay me.
It's really a matter of choice and preference. To each his own. We all live (and work) by our own standards. At least I do.
