May I ask why you want to travel Alaska with a tour & not on your own?

Hi, i can't speak for other companies, but we did a Mexico trip with Adventure Caravans and really enjoyed that trip. Friends we made on the Mexico trip did the Calgary Stampede and Alaska trip with Adventure and had a very good time and thought it worth the trip.
We enjoyed AC so much we signed up for 2 more, so did 3 others from the Mexico Trip, one we are on right now with them.

Aerosnitch, please do yourself a big favor and seek the help of a travel agent - especially one who is an Alaska specialist, if possible. There are many, many choices of tour companies out there; some are reputable, others just starting up, some may have unique aspects to their tours that may be right up your alley. Weeding them out by yourself will be difficult and very time-consuming. Your chances of finding a tour that will fit your needs & expectations will greatly increase if you use the services of a knowledgeable travel agent!! This is somewhat less true if you are referring to RV caravans, but it could still be helpful.

Wow!, I second that question. We've been up here all summer and it's so funny watching the caravans lining up to get into the campgrounds and taking off in the morning at 7. It's a rat race. You hear many of them lamenting why they ever got hooked into it.
If you don't need a caravan to tour in the lower 48, then you don't need one for Alaska. It's a great state, see it at your own pace.
Good luck,
Fred

In response to the question "Why I am interested in a tour group and not just go by ourselves?:
It is myself and my Mom traveling together and we thought we would be better off with a group if we had RV trouble out in the middle of Alaska. We were afraid to go it alone.

Hi Beth, I can understand as 2 women traveling you would probably feel more comfortable with some company. If you do a search within this site you'll find many reccomendations. Alaska IS mostly wilderness, but the areas you'll be in are mostly not. The roads are good & well traveled. Most towns are well equiped with anything an Rv'r could possible need or want. The people are wonderful. You are in for a great adventure, enjoy!

Hi
I went to Alaska last summer with rvalaskatours.com . It was great!!! I'd highly recommend going with Spike (he's the roadmaster).
My husband is handicapped so I had to do all of the driving. Spike has a mechanic along in case anything happens. He's from Alaska so he knows Alaska.
Go look at the web site. We were on Tour #2, 2007.
Check the tour photos.
Would love to tell you more.

We had a wonderful experience with Adventure Caravan, this summer, in Alaska. We have MANY new RV friends, that we still hear from everyday. Some of us are planning to get together again.
I would listen to people who have had the experience, not people who haven't.
Good luck!

Good luck,
Fred Fred, I'll second your thoughts. We spent two summers in AK. and YT. We alway got a laugh at the sheep, in their matching jackets, being obediently lead by the tour leader. No individuality, very little thinking, just spend thousands and do what you are told. Sorry, but I'll pass. We met a retired couple in Anchorage that had major truck problems while caravaning north from Whitehorse to Dawson. The bottom line is that they spend almost $7,000 replacing the dually rear in their one ton truck, and were running three weeks behind their caravan, which caused them to lose another $4,000. They were from Texas and touring alone, spending money for CGs and tour venues that they had already paid for with the non-refundable tour. Maybe traveling through South America or Asia, but IMHO, there are no real solid reasons to be spend that kind of money to be lead around the great white north. Alaskan RV travel is safe and easy, do it at your pace and have fun.
